ALBANY | The 2025 spring State University of New York Scholar-Athlete Award winners were announced Monday, and for the second year in a row, Farmingdale State College senior golfer
Mackenzie Kim (East Quogue, N.Y.) and senior men's tennis player
Alan Sabovic (Bohemia, N.Y.) earned Scholar-Athlete of the Year recognition in their respective sports.
The SUNY Scholar-Athlete Awards, which originated in the fall of 2022, recognize outstanding academic and athletic success in 29 different sports and are presented three times a year to coincide with the specific sports contested in the fall, winter and spring seasons. The Scholar-Athletes of the Year in each sport will then be nominated for an overall Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men's sports and women's sports in each category that will be announced in mid-July. This year's Rams honorees are the first since the spring of 2023, when men's tennis alumnus Mark Baker earned similar distinction.
Kim, a Business Management major, led FSC with a 75.75 stroke average across his 24 rounds this year. His play helped the Rams to their fifth-straight Skyline Conference title, and he earned First Team All-Skyline kudos in the process. Kim is a two-time GCAA Scholar All-American and All-Region honoree. Kim was one stroke shy of making the cut as an individual at last month's NCAA Division III Championship, after helping Farmingdale State make the cut as a team last spring for the first time since 2010.Â
Sabovic pursued a Science, Technology and Society degree after wrapping up a bachelor's program last academic year in Bioscience, and his top-flight play helped the Rams to their third-straight Skyline Conference crown and NCAA Championship appearance. He was named the Skyline Conference Player of the Year and CSC Academic All-District for the second-consecutive season, as well as First Team All-Conference for the fourth-straight occasion. Sabovic went 10-3 in singles play and 8-3 in doubles competition this season, and ends his career as the program's career leader with 50 singles wins and 49 doubles decisions.
