Softball Splits Doubleheader vs. Western Connecticut

Game 1: Farmingdale State 6, Western Connecticut 5
Game 2: Western Connecticut 3, Farmingdale State 2 (8 inn.)
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with visiting Western Connecticut State University on Wednesday, coming from behind to win the first game by a 6-5 score, before falling 3-2 in eight innings in the second tilt.

Game 1

Western Connecticut scored two unearned runs in the top of the first inning, before FSC sophomore third baseman Bailey Hammock (Port Jervis, N.Y.) crossed the plate with an unearned run of her own in the Rams' half of the inning. The Wolves tacked on one run in the second inning and a pair in the top of the third, putting the Rams behind, 5-1.

From there, FSC responded with two runs in the home half of the third inning, as well as three unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth, to come from behind and capture the opening contest.

In the bottom of the third, freshman Nikole Galgano (Levittown, N.Y.) scored on a RBI ground out by senior shortstop Angelina Capuano (Sayville, N.Y.), before Capuano's classmate, second baseman Alyssa Cowen (Garden City South, N.Y.) crossed the dish later in the inning when a teammate was hung up in a rundown on the base paths.

After Hammock started the fifth frame by reaching on an error, she scored one batter later on a double to left-center field by Capuano to pull Farmingdale State to within a 5-4 score. Capuano tied the game on a successful double-steal attempt, before sophomore outfielder Ashley Toro (Islip, N.Y.) scored from second base on a single to left-center by teammate Isabella Marchini (Hicksville, N.Y.) with the go-ahead run.

Marchini reached base safely in all three of her plate appearances, going 2-for-2 with a walk, while freshman right-hander Madison DeMaio (Elmont, N.Y.) moved to 8-5 on the year in the pitcher's circle by scattering seven hits and two earned runs while fanning a pair of Wolves.

Game 2

WestConn (11-9) scored on a wild pitch, before Farmingdale State (12-10) countered with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to go ahead 2-1. Capuano tied the game at 1-all in the fifth inning on a single to right-center field by junior Samantha Stolfi (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.), with Marchini scoring the go-ahead run when Hammock worked a bases-loaded walk one inning later.

The Wolves tied the score with two out in the top of the seventh, before cashing in with one run in the eighth inning with the international tiebreaker rule in play to earn a split over the Rams.

Galgano went 2-for-5 at the plate in the nightcap, while Marchini (2 BB), Hammock (H, BB) and Stolfi (H, BB) reached base safely two times apiece. Junior righty Deanna Ebert (Bay Shore, N.Y.) took the tough-luck loss in the circle, giving up seven hits, two earned runs and one walk while striking out four.

Farmingdale State resumes Skyline Conference play Saturday morning (April 12), when it travels to Purchase College for an 11 a.m. first pitch.
