Softball Remains Undefeated in Skyline Play, Sweeps Purchase

Game 1: Farmingdale State 14, Purchase 0 (6 inn.)
Game 2: Farmingdale State 6, Purchase 1
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State College softball team remained undefeated in Skyline Conference play, and has now won nine of its last 10 games after the Rams swept conference foe Purchase College in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. FSC picked up a 14-0 victory in six innings in the opening game, before capturing a 6-1 win over the Panthers in game two.

The Farmingdale State (14-10, 6-0 Skyline) pitching duo of freshman Madison DeMaio (Elmont, N.Y.) and sophomore Nicole Echevarria (Bayport, N.Y.) combined to limit the Panthers (7-7, 1-3) to just eight hits across the 13 innings of play, and received a pair of double plays in the infield to back their efforts in the pitcher's circle.

Game 1

Batting as the visiting team, FSC broke open a scoreless contest with a four-run top of the third inning. After DeMaio's infield single scored freshman catcher Kaysee Mojo (Riverhead, N.Y.) with the breakthrough run, senior shortstop Angelina Capuano (Sayville, N.Y.) chased home her pitcher with a single through the left side of the infield to double the Rams' edge. Junior Samantha Stolfi (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) added a two-run double to left, upping the Farmingdale State lead to 4-0.

Sophomore Isabella Marchini (Hicksville, N.Y.) scored classmate Ashley Toro (Islip, N.Y.) on a sacrifice one inning later, before FSC tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning to lead by a 7-0 count. Stolfi drove in sophomore Bailey Hammock (Port Jervis, N.Y.) on a single through the left side, before sophomore Madison Sturtz (East Islip, N.Y.) scored Stolfi on a double to center field.

The Rams added a seven-run sixth inning, which included a pinch-hit, three-run homer to left field from freshman Hailey Cannon (Forest Hills, N.Y.).

Hammock finished the game 3-for-5 with two stolen bases and three runs scored, while Stolfi (2-for-3) and Marchini drove in three runs apiece. DeMaio upped her record to 9-5 on the season with five innings of three-hit, four-strikeout ball.

Game 2

Purchase took a 1-0 lead on a solo homer in the second inning, Marchini leveled the score in the top of the third when she come home on Galgano's (2 RBI) infield grounder.

Farmingdale State took the lead for good with two runs in the fifth inning, as Echevarria's bunt single scored Toro before junior Lauren Varagnolo (Centereach, N.Y.) sprinted home on a sacrifice fly to left by Galgano.

Toro's two-out single through the left side in the sixth inning plated Capuano to increase the Rams' margin to 4-1, while Stolfi's two-run single to center in the seventh scored Galgano and Hammock to account for the final score.

Echevarria moved to 4-3 on the season with four scoreless innings, scattering two hits while fanning three Panthers. Echevarria and Toro recorded two hits apiece,

Farmingdale State is next scheduled to compete at home Wednesday (April 16), when it plays host to Hunter College in a 3:30 p.m., non-conference doubleheader.
