FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State College softball team upped its winning streak to six-consecutive games on Sunday, as the Rams swept the University of Mount Saint Vincent in a Skyline Conference doubleheader. FSC held off the Dolphins by a 6-4 score in the first game, before using a six-run seventh inning to come from behind and capture the finale, 9-4.
Game 1
In the opening game, Farmingdale State scored in each of the first four innings to jump ahead, 5-0. Freshman outfielder
Nikole Galgano (Levittown, N.Y.) opened the scoring in the first after reaching on a leadoff single and scoring on an error. AÂ one-out single by freshman catcher
Kaysee Mojo (Riverhead, N.Y.) doubled the lead in the second, scoring sophomore
Ashley Toro (Islip, N.Y.).Â
Seniors
Angelina Capuano (Sayville, N.Y.) and
Alyssa Cowen (Garden City South, N.Y.) each scored in the third frame to bump the FSC edge to 4-0, while Galgano's second run of the game came in the fourth inning on an opposite-field single by sophomore
Bailey Hammock (Port Jervis, N.Y.). Sophomore
Madison Sturtz (East Islip, N.Y.) ripped a one-out triple in the seventh inning and came home on a RBI grounder by Toro, before and freshman pitcher
Madison DeMaio (Elmont, N.Y.) worked around a four-run bottom half of the inning by Mount Saint Vincent to capture the game-one victory.
Sturtz finished 3-for-4 at the plate. with Galgano (2 SB) and Hammock each going 2-for-4 in the top-two spots in the Rams' batting order. DeMaio moved to 7-5 in the pitcher's circle on the season, scattering six hits and four walks while striking out eight Dolphins.
Game 2
In the second game, FSC (11-9, 4-0 Skyline) got on the board early when Capuano's one-out double to left scored Galgano. Mount Saint Vincent (7-12, 2-2) countered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, and one more in the third, to go ahead, 3-1.Â
The Rams rallied with two runs in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game at 3-3, with Galgano scoring on an infield error and Hammock coming across the plate on a double-steal attempt two batters later.
UMSV used back-to-back hits in the bottom of the fifth inning to go back ahead by a 4-3 count, setting the stage for a must-score top of the seventh for Farmingdale State. From there, the Rams sent 11 batters to the plate and scored six times in their last at-bat. After a leadoff, pinch-hit single by sophomore
Michelle Segura (Riverhead, N.Y.), FSC took the lead when pinch-runner
Lauren Varagnolo (Centereach, N.Y.) and Galgano came around on an error following a bunt single by Hammock. Capuano then squeezed home Hammock to give the green and white a 6-4 advantage, while three runs scored on a base hit by Mojo to push the Rams' edge to five runs.
Galgano reached base safely three times on two hits and a walk, scoring three runs and swiping two stolen bases from her leadoff spot in the batting order. Capuano went 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Mojo picked up two RBI on her seventh-inning hit. Sophomore hurler
Nicole Echevarria (Bayport, N.Y.) picked up the win after tossing a perfect sixth inning in relief, moving to 3-3 on the season in the process.
Farmingdale State is next at home for a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon, when it welcomes Western Connecticut State University for a 3:30 p.m. first pitch.
