THROGGS NECK, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State College baseball team suffered a Skyline Conference sweep Tuesday night at Maritime College, dropping the first game by a 5-4 score, before falling 7-5 in the nightcap.
Game 1
The two teams combined for four home runs in the opening game, with a two-run shot by the Privateers in the third inning canceling out a two-run single in the top of the first inning by Rams sophomore
Ryan Tam (Wantagh, N.Y.).
FSC reclaimed the lead in the fourth inning on a solo home run to right field by FSC junior
Christopher Sais (Hicksville, N.Y.), before a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth pushed Maritime ahead, 4-3.
Tam scored the game-tying run in the top of the sixth inning on a single to center field by junior
Christian Villacci (Smithtown, N.Y.), however the Privateers went back ahead on a home run in the bottom half of the inning.Â
Villacci and Tam (one stolen base) both finished the opener 2-for-3 at the plate, while freshman shortstop
Kaolis Delacruz (Levittown, N.Y.) went 2-for-4.Â
Game 2
Delacruz put Farmingdale State (19-11, 12-4 Skyline) ahead in the top of the first inning with a solo homer to right-center field, before Maritime (21-14, 12-4) responded with three runs in the bottom half of the frame and one more in the third inning to push ahead, 4-1.
Villacci tied the game in the top of the fourth inning with a three-run double to right field, scoring Delacruz, Tam and senior
Jordan Lambert (Plainview, N.Y.). One batter later, Villacci moved up 90 feet on a balk before scoring the go-ahead run on an infield single by junior
Mike Kocovic (Mahopac, N.Y.) to put FSC in front, 5-4.
Farmingdale State left two runners in scoring position in the top of the eighth inning, before Maritime scored three in its half of the inning to retake the lead and account for the final score.
Lambert and Villacci each finished the nightcap 2-for-3 with a run scored, while junior right-handed pitcher
Derek Watts (Baldwin, N.Y.) tossed three innings of one-hit, one-walk shutout ball in middle relief.
FSC enters the final weekend of regular-season play in a five-way tie for first place atop the Skyline Conference standings, along with Maritime, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Mount Saint Mary College and St. Joseph's-Long Island. The Rams are back on the diamond Saturday for a noontime "Senior Day" doubleheader against visiting USMMA.
