FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State College softball team picked up a pair of wins over Skyline Conference opponent St. Joseph's-Brooklyn on Sunday. FSC took game one in six innings by an 11-1 score before earning a 7-1 win in the second. With the victories, the Rams improved to 22-12 overall and 12-2 in conference play.
Game 1
Farmingdale State trailed 1-0 in the third inning and scored three runs to take the lead. Freshmen
Kaysee Mojo (Riverhead, N.Y.) and
Nikole Galgano (Levittown, N.Y.) led off with back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second. Two batters later, sophomore center fielder
Ashley Toro (Islip, N.Y.) recorded an RBI single to tie the game. During the next at-bat, Galgano and Toro converted a successful double steal to put the Rams ahead, 2-1. Later in the inning, a ground out scored Toro to go up 3-1.
FSC tallied four runs in each of the final two innings as they secured the 11-1 run-rule victory. In the fifth, Toro hit a two-run home run, her second of the season, while junior designated player
Samantha Stolfi (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) and sophomore first baseman
Madison Sturtz (East Islip, N.Y.) each produced RBI singles. Toro, sophomore third baseman
Bailey Hammock (Port Jervis, N.Y.), and senior second baseman
Alyssa Cowen (Garden City South, N.Y. - x2) each contributed RBI's in the sixth as FSC went on for the run-rule victory.
Toro finished with three hits, a triple, home run, four runs batted in and three runs scored. She was just a double shy of hitting for the cycle. Hammock registered three hits, two runs and an RBI, while Galgano was 2-for-2 with a walk and three runs scored.
Freshman pitcher
Madison DeMaio (Elmont, N.Y.) improved to 15-6 on the year, tossing a complete game and allowing just one run.
Game 2
Game two was knotted at 1-1 heading into the fifth before FSC scored twice to go up, 3-1. Toro walked and later scored on an RBI single by Stolfi. During the next at-bat, senior shortstop
Angelina Capuano came in to score on a wild pitch.
The Rams added four runs in the sixth after loading the bases with none out. Capuano earned an RBI hit-by-pitch before Sturtz recorded a two-run single. Farmingdale State's final run scored on a throwing error as they took the 7-1 lead.
Junior pitcher
Deanna Ebert (Bay Shore, N.Y. - 3.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER) closed out the game to earn her first career save. She caught a comeback line drive and doubled the runner off at first base to clinch the victory for the Rams.
Stolfi and Sturtz ended with two hits and two RBI's apiece in the win, while Hammock added two more hits in the second game. Capuano chipped in with a base hit, one RBI and two runs scored.
Farmingdale State will next play host to non-conference opponent John Jay for a doubleheader on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
