FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State College softball team suffered a pair of losses to Skyline Conference foe St. Joseph's-Long Island on Friday, falling in the opening contest by a 7-6 score, before dropping a 2-1 decision in the nightcap.
Game 1
Farmingdale State got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the second inning, when sophomore
Ashley Toro's (Islip, N.Y.) sacrifice fly scored freshman
Kaysee Mojo (Riverhead, N.Y.) before freshman
Nikole Galgano (Levittown, N.Y.) came home on a double steal attempt.
The Golden Eagles notched four unearned runs in the top of the third inning, before FSC knotted the game at 4-all courtesy of single runs in the fourth and fifth. After freshman pitcher
Madison DeMaio (Elmont, N.Y.) cut the Rams' deficit to 4-3 when she trotted home on a single up the middle by sophomore
Bailey Hammock (Port Jervis, N.Y.), senior
Alyssa Cowen (Garden City South, N.Y.) tied the game in the fifth when she crossed the plate on an infield error.
St. Joseph's went back ahead for good with a two-run sixth inning, before tacking on one more in the seventh. Farmingdale State scored twice in the home half of the seventh to pull to within a 7-6 count, but was unable to tie the game. Mojo's sacrifice fly to right scored sophomore
Madison Sturtz (East Islip, N.Y.), while fellow sophomore
Isabella Marchini (Hicksville, N.Y.) sprinted home in the next at-bat on a wild pitch.
DeMaio struck out four Golden Eagles in the pitcher's circle.
Game 2
St. Joseph's (16-10, 8-4 Skyline) scored a pair of unearned runs in the second inning off Farmingdale State (20-12, 10-2) sophomore starter
Nicole Echevarria (Bayport, N.Y.).Â
FSC left two runners in scoring position in the home half of the third inning, before pulling a run back in the bottom of the sixth. Marchini's one-out double to left field scored freshman
Jayna Huertas (Mastic, N.Y.), and later moved to third base on a wild pitch. But the Rams could get no closer, as St. Joseph's worked around the danger and stranded one more FSC runner at third base in the seventh inning.
Toro went 2-for-4 in the leadoff spot of the FSC lineup, with junior
Samantha Stolfi (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) recording one double. Echevarria scattered just three hits across her four innings of pitching, while junior reliever
Deanna Ebert (Bay Shore, N.Y.) tossed three scoreless innings.
Farmingdale State is back in action at home on Sunday, when it takes on Skyline opponent St. Joseph's-Brooklyn in a noontime doubleheader. The Bears will bat as the home team in both contests.
