FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | Playing its second match in a 24-hour span, the Farmingdale State College men's tennis team got back to its winning ways Thursday, as the Rams defeated Skyline Conference foe Yeshiva University, 5-2.
With the victory, the Rams (13-3, 5-1 Skyline) are now tied in the loss column with the Maccabees (8-4, 6-1) and the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Farmingdale State rounds out its regular-season schedule Friday at 3 p.m., when it plays host to its "Senior Day" match against St. Joseph's-Long Island; a victory would secure a home semifinal game next Monday (April 28) in the four-team Skyline Conference Championship.
FSC took a 1-0 lead after doubles play, as it secured two of the three matches over YU. The top-flight duo of upperclassmen
Alan Sabovic (Bohemia, N.Y.) and
Ryan Hendel (Merrick, N.Y.) defeated Macs' counterparts Matan Kamhi and Jacob Feit, 6-2, while the No. 2 Rams tandem of freshman
Zakaria Ahmed (Manhasset, N.Y.) and senior
Vansh Aggarwal (Mumbai, India) bested David Cattan and Eithan Sapir by a 6-3 count. For Sabovic, the victory moved him into sole possession of Farmingdale State's career doubles wins mark, as he now has 47 wins over the course of his time in a green and white uniform. He entered the afternoon tied with former teammate Mark Baker (2019; '21-23) for the top mark all-time at FSC.
Sabovic's 6-1, 6-2 singles victory in the top flight over Kahmi was the first into the scorebook, as well as the school-record 49th win of his career.Â
Also by a 6-1, 6-2 score line, Ahmed pushed the FSC advantage to 3-0 at No. 2 versus Jacob Pfeifer, before freshman
Michael Lerman (Massapequa, N.Y.) clinched the team match with his 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 decision in the fifth flight over Feit. Sabovic's brother, sophomore
Emil Sabovic (Bohemia, N.Y.), rounded out the Rams' victories at the No. 6 position, using a pair of tiebreaker set wins to outlast Adler, 7-6 (7-4), 4-6 and 7-6 (7-5).
