FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State men's tennis team, playing its third match in 48 hours, defeated visiting St. Joseph's-Long Island, 7-0 on Friday afternoon. The Rams finish the regular season with a 6-1 conference record and have secured a home Semifinal match in next week's Skyline Conference Championship.
Prior to the match, a Senior Day ceremony was held honoring seniors
Matthew Murrell (Shirley, N.Y.),
Ryan Hendel (Merrick, N.Y.),
Alan Sabovic (Bohemia, N.Y.) and
Muhammad Sawar (Brentwood, N.Y.).
FSC (14-3) quickly won the doubles point as the duos of Sabovic and Hendel, and freshmen
Zakaria Ahmed (Manhasset, N.Y.) and
Myles Freelin (Islip, N.Y.) each posted 6-0 victories. The third pairing of Murrell and sophomore
Emil Sabovic (Bohemia, N.Y.) added a 6-2 win.
In singles play, Freelin was first in the book with a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Ahmed followed with an identical 6-1, 6-0 win before A. Sabovic clinched the team match in the No. 1 singles slot, winning 6-0, 6-0.
Freshmen
Michael Lerman (Massapequa, N.Y. - 6-1, 6-1),
Jordan Gonzales (Central Islip, N.Y. - 6-2, 6-2) and
Jake Pepitone (Carle Place, N.Y. - 6-1, 6-2) each contributed straight set victories as the Rams went on for the 7-0 shutout.
The Rams have earned their spot in the Skyline Conference playoffs and will host the Semifinal round. The match will begin at 4:30 p.m. against an opponent to be determined.
