Men's Tennis Tripped Up at USMMA

U.S. Merchant Marine Academy 5, Farmingdale State 2
KINGS POINT, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State College men's tennis team suffered its first loss in its last 11 outings on Wednesday, as the Rams dropped a 5-2, Skyline Conference match at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

FSC (12-3, 4-1 Skyline) received singles victories in the top-two flights from senior Alan Sabovic (Bohemia, N.Y.) and freshman Zakaria Ahmed (Manhasset, N.Y.). Sabovic's 6-0, 6-4 win in the top flight over USMMA's (7-3, 5-1) Brent Matthews is the school-record 48th of his career, while Ahmed came back from one set down at the No. 2 position to best R.J. Novak, 2-6, 6-3 and 6-2.

The host Mariners captured the doubles point by winning two out of three matches, with FSC earning a top-flight victory courtesy of Sabovic and junior Ryan Hendel (Merrick, N.Y.), 6-4, versus Connor McQuade and Novak. For Sabovic, the victory in doubles competition was the 46th of his Rams career, and ties him for the top mark in that category with Mark Baker (2019; '21-23).

Farmingdale State's three Skyline matches in as many days stretch to close out the regular season continues Thursday afternoon, when it plays host to Skyline-unbeaten Yeshiva University at 4:30.
