Softball Captures Two Skyline Wins vs. Old Westbury

Game 1: Farmingdale State 10, Old Westbury 1 (5 inn.)
Game 2: Farmingdale State 9, Old Westbury 0 (5 inn.)
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | Sophomore outfielder Isabella Marchini (Hicksville, N.Y.) tallied three doubles and five runs batted in across the Farmingdale State College softball team's doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, as the Rams swept a pair of mercy-rule-shortened Skyline Conference games from SUNY Old Westbury. FSC (18-10, 8-0 Skyline) took the opening game by a 10-1 count, before capturing the second contest by a 9-0 final over the Panthers (12-14, 4-4 Skyline).

Game 1

FSC jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, when sophomores Ashley Toro (Islip, N.Y.) and Bailey Hammock (Port Jervis, N.Y.) came around to score on a bunt single by senior shortstop Angelina Capuano (Sayville, N.Y.).

The Rams then sent 13 hitters to the plate in an eight-run bottom of the second inning, with Marchini leading off the slate with a double to left field, before lofting a sacrifice fly to center field in her second plate appearance to score senior Alyssa Cowen (Garden City South, N.Y.) with the hosts' ninth run of the contest. Hammock, junior Samantha Stolfi (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) and sophomore Madison Sturtz (East Islip, N.Y.) also registered RBI in the inning.

Capuano finished the opener 2-for-3 at the plate, while Toro and Hammock scored two runs and stole one base apiece. Freshman right-hander Madison DeMaio (Elmont, N.Y.) picked up the win in the pitcher's circle, scattering eight hits and one walk while striking out six Panthers – including a punch-out with the bases loaded to end the game in the fifth inning.

Game 2

The Rams scored two runs apiece in the first and third innings, before setting up the mercy rule with a five-run fourth inning.

In the first, Sturtz's single up the middle scored Hammock and Capuano (3 R), before Marchini's double down the right-field line in the third plated Capuano and Sturtz to double the FSC lead to 4-0 over the Panthers.

Junior Lauren Varagnolo (Centereach, N.Y.) scored to start out the five-run fifth on Hammock's sacrfice bunt, with FSC tacking on four more runs with two outs in the inning. Sturtz's single behind second base scored Capuano, before scoring along with Cowen on Marchini's double into the right-center field gap. One batter later, Marchini rounded out the scoring when she scored on a base hit down the left-field line by freshman catcher Kaysee Mojo (Riverhead, N.Y.).

DeMaio (12-5) needed just 58 pitches to pick up her fourth shutout of the season, and stranded a pair of Panthers in scoring position in the second on her way to a four-hit, two-strikeout complete game.

Farmingdale State, winners of six-straight games and 13 of its last 14, is back in Skyline action Wednesday (April 23), when it travels to Newburgh, N.Y., for a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Mount Saint Mary College.
