Baseball Splits with Manhattanville in Road Doubleheader

Game 1: Farmingdale State 4, Manhattanville 2
Game 2: Manhattanville 9, Farmingdale State 8
PURCHASE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State baseball team traveled to Manhattanville University on Monday and split a Skyline Conference doubleheader. The Rams took the opener 4-2 before the Valiants rallied late to earn a 9-8 win in game two. FSC now sits at 8-2 in Skyline Conference play (15-9 overall), while Manhattanville is 4-6 (14-13 overall).

Game 1

Farmingdale State trailed 1-0 in the third inning of game one when three consecutive hits led to a run for the Rams. Senior third baseman Tyler DiRocco (Commack, N.Y.) led off with a double, junior right fielder Richie Heyder (Holbrook, N.Y.) followed with a single, and senior second baseman Chris McGuggart (Bethpage, N.Y.) drove in DiRocco with a base hit.

After Manhattanville regained the lead, 2-1, Heyder responded with a towering solo home run over the right field fence to once again tie the score. Later in the inning, senior first baseman Jordan Lambert (Plainview, N.Y.) reached on a two-out error and quickly scored on an double by freshman shortstop Kaolis Delacruz (Levittown, N.Y.), giving FSC its first lead, 3-2.

The Valiants (14-13) threatened with two runners on in the sixth, but DiRocco, who moved from third base to the mound, struck out the next batter to maintain the one-run advantage.

The Rams added an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Delacruz scored on a wild pitch.

DiRocco (Sv, 4) forced three fly outs in the bottom half of the inning to notch his fourth save of the season and seal the 4-2 win for Farmingdale State.

Heyder finished with two hits, including the home run, and a walk. Delacruz had two hits, an RBI and one run scored, while Lambert and DiRocco chipped in with a hit and one run scored apiece.

Junior Derek Watts (Baldwin, N.Y. - W, 4-1) picked up his Skyline-leading fourth win of the season, throwing 5.2 innings and allowing just one earned run.

Game 2

Farmingdale State jumped out to a quick lead in game two as DiRocco, Heyder and Delacruz all reached base before senior left fielder Justin DiMartino (Bethpage, N.Y.) laced a two-out, bases-clearing triple to give the Rams a 3-0 advantage.

The Valiants answered with two runs in the bottom half of the first on a single and sacrifice fly, then took a 4-3 lead with two more in the second.

The game was knotted at 5-5 heading into the ninth inning and FSC put up three runs to take an 8-5 lead. Delacruz delivered a two-out, two run single before scoring on a single by sophomore Ryan Tam (Wantagh, N.Y.).

In the bottom of the ninth, Manhattanville led off with a walk and reached on an error, putting two runners on with none out. After a pair of outs, a walk loaded the bases. The Valiants then used a two-run single and an RBI hit-by-pitch to tie the score at 8-8. Their ninth run came in on a wild pitch as they earned the 9-8 Skyline victory.

Heyder tallied three more hits in game two and scored three runs. He has 13 hits in his last 17 at-bats and is now batting .435 this season (5th in Skyline). Delacruz registered two hits, three runs batted in and three runs scored in the loss.

Sophomore pitcher Dennis Kelly (North Babylon, N.Y.) did not receive a decision, but tossed seven innings in relief and allowed just one earned run with eight strike outs.

Farmingdale State's home game versus Lehman, originally scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, has been canceled. The Rams return to action on Friday when they visit St. Joseph's-Long Island for a Skyline doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m. The doubleheader, which is a rematch of last year's Skyline Conference Championship, will also serve as a Suicide Awareness Game with both teams wearing special shirts to raise awareness.
