Game 2: New Paltz 8, Farmingdale State 7
NEW PALTZ, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State College softball team split a road doubleheader Saturday at SUNY New Paltz, earning a come-from-behind, 4-3 victory in opening game before falling on a walk-off sacrifice fly, 8-7, in the nightcap.
Game 1
The Hawks quickly jumped in front with a first-inning two-run home run, and added an unearned run in the third to lead 3-0.
The Rams were held to just two hits heading into the sixth, and loaded the bases with three consecutive one-out walks. Sophomore first baseman
Madison Sturtz (East Islip, N.Y.) batted next, and her infield single to drive in the visitors' first run of the afternoon and slice their deficit to 3-1.
In the top of the seventh, sophomore
Michelle Segura (Shirley, N.Y.) started a three-run rally by connecting on a pinch-hit, one-out single to bring the tying run to the plate. Freshman right fielder
Nikole Galgano (Levittown, N.Y.) followed with a single, before sophomore third baseman
Bailey Hammock (Port Jervis, N.Y.) laced a RBI double, scoring both runners to level the contest at 3-all, and advanced to third base on an error. Two batters later, junior designated player
Samantha Stolfi (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) laid down a perfect squeeze bunt to bring home Hammock and give FSC its first lead of the day, 4-3. From there, freshman right-hander
Madison DeMaio (Elmont, N.Y.) tossed a 1-2-3 bottom half of the inning, including two strike outs, to secure the Farmingdale State win.
Galgano tallied two hits and one run scored, while Hammock had a hit, walk, two runs scored and one RBI. Stolfi finished with a walk and the game-deciding sacrifice in the seventh, with DeMaio earning her fourth victory of the season in the circle.
Game 2
Farmingdale State (5-9) jumped ahead in the top of the first inning, when freshman catcher
Kaysee Mojo (Riverhead, N.Y.) ripped a three-run double to score Hammock, senior
Angelina Capuano and sophomore
Madison Sturtz (East Islip, N.Y.).
The Rams extended their lead to 5-0 two innings later, when Mojo's second double of the contest plated Sturtz, before coming home on a double by sophomore
Ashley Toro (Islip, N.Y.).
New Paltz (4-12) scored the next seven runs of the game, including four in bottom of the third inning, a pair one inning later and a single run in the fifth, to go ahead by a 7-5 count.
Farmingdale State battled back, and tied the game at 7-7 with a two-run top of the sixth. DeMaio helped herself with a leadoff walk, moved up 60 feet apiece on a sacrifice bunt by senior
Alyssa Cowen (Garden City South, N.Y.) and fielder's choice by Galgano, respectively, and came home on a squeeze bunt by Hammock to cut the FSC deficit to 7-6. Galgano stole second base before advancing to third on Hammock's sacrifice, and trotted home with the tying run on a two-out single by Capuano.
The Hawks received a leadoff triple to start the bottom of the seventh inning, and won on a sacrifice fly to the outfield to earn a split on the day.
Mojo finished the nightcap 2-for-4 at the dish, as did Galgano from her leadoff spot in the batting order. Galgano, Hammock and Capuano each stole one base in the finale.
Farmingdale State next plays host to Albertus Magnus for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon (April 2) at 3:30.
