Game 2: Farmingdale State 6, Albertus Magnus 1
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State College softball team picked up a doubleheader sweep Wednesday over visiting Albertus Magnus College, as the Rams (7-9) shut out the Falcons (10-10) 6-0 in the opening game, before capturing a 6-1 victory in the nightcap.
Game 1
FSC scored three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings in support of freshman pitcher
Madison DeMaio (Elmont, N.Y.), who tossed a complete-game four-hit shutout in the circle with three walks and five strikeouts to move to 5-5 on the year.
In the fourth, senior
Angelina Capuano (Sayville, N.Y.) reached first base on a leadoff hit by pitch, before scoring on a triple down the right-field line by junior
Samantha Stolfi (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.). Sophomore
Madison Sturtz (East Islip, N.Y.) singled on a bunt down the third-base line one batter later to score pinch-runner and senior
Alyssa Cowen (Garden City South, N.Y.), with fellow sophomore
Isabella Marchini's (Hicksville, N.Y.) two-out single to left field scoring her classmate to give the Rams a 3-0 edge.
Capuano and Stolfi started the Farmingdale State offense once again in the bottom of the fifth inning, reaching on another hit by pitch and a single through the right side, respectively, to put runners on the corners. Cowen pinch-ran at first base, and proceeded to steal second to join Capuano in scoring position. Sturtz followed her third-base-line bunt single in the fourth with nearly the same placement on her bunt hit in the fifth, scoring Capuano and moving Cowen to third to place runners at the corners. Cowen and Sturtz then came home on RBI ground outs by freshman
Kaysee Mojo (Riverhead, N.Y.) and sophomore
Ashley Toro (Islip, N.Y.), respectively, to push the FSC lead to six.
Sturtz (two runs) and Stolfi both finished 2-for-3 at the dish, with Hammock, Marchini and freshman
Nikole Galgano (Levittown, N.Y.) picking up one hit apiece. DeMaio helped herself by starting both of the Rams' double plays on defense.
Game 2
Single runs across the first four innings backed Farmingdale State righty
Nicole Echevarria (Bayport, N.Y.), with the hosts taking the lead for good in the bottom of the first when Stolfi's single down the left-field line scored Hammock (2-for-4). For Stolfi, it was her 100th career hit in a green and white uniform.
Marchini's (2-for-3) two-out single to right field scored Sturtz in the second frame, while Capuano plated Galgano (2-for-3, 2 R, 3 SB) with a single to center in the third. Toro upped the Rams' lead to 4-0 in the fourth inning when she crossed the plate on a wild pitch, before the hosts responded to a single Falcons run in the top of the sixth with a two-run bottom half of the inning on runs by senior
Anna Gibbons (East Northport, N.Y.) and Galgano.
Echevarria scattered nine hits while fanning two to earn her first victory in the circle of the campaign.
Farmingdale State next opens Skyline Conference play with a pair of home doubleheaders this weekend, beginning with a 9:30 a.m. set Friday morning against Yeshiva University. The Rams will then play a 10:30 a.m. twinbill Sunday versus the University of Mount Saint Vincent, with FSC batting as the away team in contests moved due to the forecasted inclement weather in the tri-state area this weekend.
