FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State College women's lacrosse team opened its season Wednesday night at home, falling to Vassar College by a 19-9 final.

The Brewers (2-0) tallied the first three goals of the game, before FSC (0-1) sophomore Olivia Cassese (Farmingdale, N.Y.) scored the Rams first of the season to make it 3-1.

With 2:04 to play in the first quarter, Farmingdale State senior attack Jules Loughran (Smithtown, N.Y.) found the back of the net to close to within one.

The Rams trailed 4-2 after the first quarter and opened the second with an unassisted goal from junior attack Emily Sohm (Seaford, N.Y.). Vassar responded with three goals, including two woman-down, to take a 7-4 lead into the halftime break.

The Brewers were up 8-5 early in the third before adding a pair of goals to take a 10-5 advantage. Sohm and Loughran registered scores in the final 6:09 of the quarter, but the Rams found themselves down 13-7 heading to the fourth.

Vassar outscored FSC, 6-2, in the final quarter as they went on for the 19-9 victory.

Cassese paced the Rams offense with a career-high four goals to go with three caused turnovers in transition, while Sohm collected a hat trick. Loughran netted a pair of goals in her FSC debut, while classmate and defender Sarah Fava (Lynbrook, N.Y.) led all players with four ground balls and as many caused turnovers. Junior goalkeeper Giavanna Stamatelo (Levittown, N.Y.) set a career-high with 16 saves in the Farmingdale State net.

FSC totaled 16 caused turnovers as a team in defeat, including two apiece from Rylee Valenzano (Centereach, N.Y.), Dominique Baldino (Island Park, N.Y.), and Kailee Coppola (Levittown, N.Y.).

The Rams will next travel to Danbury, Conn., on Saturday (March 1) for a 4 p.m. opening draw at Western Connecticut State University.
