PURCHASE, N.Y. | Fifth-seeded Farmingdale State erased a two-goal deficit and defeated fourth-seeded Manhattanville, 3-2, in overtime in the first round of the Skyline Conference Men's Soccer Championship on Saturday afternoon. Senior forward
Tyree Baskin Jr. (Freeport, N.Y.) scored twice, including the game-winner in the 97th minute, to send the Rams to the semifinals.
Manhattanville (8-11-1) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead midway through the first half. Roberto Velasquez-Osorio opened the scoring in the 15th minute, and just 40 seconds later, Kenneth Suqui doubled the Valiants' advantage.
Farmingdale State (6-8-4) responded in the 27th minute when Baskin Jr. received a long ball out of the back, beat his defender, and buried a shot into the top right corner to cut the deficit in half.
The Rams continued to press and found the equalizer early in the second half. In the 53rd minute, freshman Carlos Hernandez (Dix Hills, N.Y.) delivered a corner kick that curled directly into the net to tie the game at 2-2.
Neither side could find the go-ahead goal in regulation, sending the match into overtime. The Valiants controlled play to start overtime, but senior goalkeeper Rocco Dispinseri (Dix Hills, N.Y.) came up with key saves to keep the game tied. In the 97th minute, freshman Josue Corea (Wyandanch, N.Y.) sent a long cross from the left corner into the box, where Baskin Jr. headed the ball into the upper right corner for the game-winner to secure the 3-2 overtime victory.
Dispinseri finished with six saves in goal for the Rams, who were outshot 29-15.
With the win, Farmingdale State (6-8-4) advances to the Skyline Conference semifinals and will travel to top-seeded Mount Saint Vincent on Wednesday, November 5th at 7:30 p.m.
