Farmingdale State 4, Manhattanville 3
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | A 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 3 singles by freshman
Kaelin Burnett (East Islip, N.Y.) on Tuesday night clinched the Farmingdale State College women's tennis team's 4-3 triumph over Manhattanville University in a battle of unbeaten squads in Skyline Conference play.
FSC (5-4, 3-0 Skyline) led 1-0 after doubles play, and tripled its advantage over the Valiants (4-2, 3-1) behind singles victories from seniors
Mikayla DeMaria (West Babylon, N.Y.) and
Gabriella Loria (Levittown, N.Y.) in the Nos. 6 and 5 flights, respectively. DeMaria won her match over her Manhattanville counterpart via retirement, while Loria bested Maria Gutierrez, 6-3 and 6-2. The Valiants sliced their deficit to 3-2 following wins in the top-two flights, before Burnett's decision versus Addison Ortiz wrapped up the host side's victory.
Farmingdale State earned the doubles point courtesy of wins in the second and third flights to start the competition. Loria and freshman
Martine McGowan (Port Washington, N.Y.) were 6-2 victors in the No. 2 slot against Ortiz and Jennifer Lalman, while DeMaria teamed with fellow senior
MacKenzie Gisler (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) for a third-flight decision by the same score against Gutierrez and Mikhalia Grant.
FSC next travels to Purchase, N.Y., on Saturday (Oct. 11) at 4 p.m., for a Skyline Conference match versus first-year program University of Mount Saint Vincent.
