Men's Basketball Holds Off Yeshiva in Skyline Battle

Farmingdale State - 67, Yeshiva - 66
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State College men's basketball team held on for a 67-66 victory over Skyline opponent Yeshiva University on Wednesday evening. The Rams (10-8, 7-2 Skyline) led by as many as 15, but the Maccabees (10-8, 7-2 Skyline) battled back and closed the gap to just two, 65-63, with possession. It was then that FSC sophomore forward Kentrell Evans (Brooklyn, N.Y.) made a crucial block on a potential game-tying layup and freshman forward Jordan Tucker (Elmont, N.Y.) sealed the win with two clutch free-throws in the final moments.

It was Greek Night at FSC, with the Athletics Department welcoming fraternities and sororities for snacks and halftime competitions. Students from Kappa Sigma, Alpha Pie Delta, Tau Kappa Epsilon, Delta Phi Epsilon, Phi Sigma Sigma, Sigma Delta Tau, Alpha Sigma Pie and Beta Psi Sigma energized the crowd and brought the noise to Nold Hall.

After Yeshiva scored the opening basket, Farmingdale State registered the next 13 points over a four minute stretch to take an early 11-point advantage. Junior guard Michael Notias (Manhasset, N.Y.) produced five points on a layup and a 3-pointer, while Evans produced a pair of dunks in the run.

The Maccabees trailed 17-8 with 10:47 to play in the first half and closed the gap to just three after three consecutive layups.

The Rams led 25-19 before each team hit a 3-pointer in the final minute as the score was 28-22 at the halftime break.

Yeshiva came out strong in the second half, hitting two quick 3's to cut the deficit to just two points, 30-28. Farmingdale State responded with three points apiece from sophomore forward Liam Buckley (Manhasset, N.Y.) and junior guard Sean Conroy (Staten Island, N.Y.), and an Evans jumper to go ahead by 10, 38-28.

The Rams still led by 10, 52-42, before a 7-2 spurt gave FSC their largest lead of the game 59-44 with six minutes remaining.

The Maccabees battled their way back into the game, knocking down a 3-pointer with two minutes to play to cut it to three at 64-61. Farmingdale State hit 1-of-2 free-throws on its next possession, and a set play led to a Yeshiva layup, pulling the Maccabees within two at 65-63 with 1:20 remaining.

After a missed a shot from each team, Yeshiva had the ball with 17 seconds left, trailing by two. The Maccabees attempted a layup to tie the game, but Evans came up with the key blocked the shot with three seconds remaining.

The Rams gained possession and Tucker was immediately fouled. He sank both free-throws to put Farmingdale State ahead 67-63 with just 2.5 seconds to play. The Maccabees hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to account for the 67-66 final score.

Notias led the Rams with 16 points and four rebounds, while Evans produced a double-double with 15 points, 10 rebounds and one big blocked shot. Senior guard Jevon Santos (Elmont, N.Y.) finished with 11 points and six rebounds and Conroy recorded 10 points, four rebounds and three assists. Buckley added seven points, seven rebounds and three assists in the victory.

The Rams next play host to Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday, February 1st at 1:00 p.m.
