Men's Soccer Ties Merchant Marine

Farmingdale State 2, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy 2
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | Junior winger Tyree Baskin Jr. (Freeport, N.Y.) notched his first-career two-goal game Tuesday night for the Farmingdale State College men's soccer team, which tied the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, 2-2, in Skyline Conference competition.

Baskin Jr. opened the scoring for the Rams (5-2-3, 2-0-2 Skyline) 4:13 into action, starting when senior forward Olvin Yanes (Selden, N.Y.) played freshman winger Jean Mejia (Freeport, N.Y.) into space down the left flank. The rookie cut the ball back across the six-yard box, where Baskin Jr. netted for the fourth time this season to put the host side ahead of the Mariners (4-3-2, 1-1-2).

Just over three minutes later, Baskin Jr. scored from the right wing to notch his career-high fifth goal on the campaign. Senior fullback Daniel Rivas (Westbury, N.Y.) fed Baskin Jr. on a right-side throw-in, who then carried into the penalty area to beat the USMMA keeper for the second time in the match's first eight minutes.

The Mariners pulled one goal back before halftime on a cross from the right endline in the 31st minute of play, before squaring the match on a 51st-minute penalty to account for the final score.

FSC outshot USMMA 24-14 on the night (15-6 in the second half), including an 8-7 edge in shots on target. Rams sophomore keeper Anthony Martinez (Bay Shore, N.Y.) made five saves in the hosts' net, helping Farmingdale State to remain undefeated in its last five matches (3-0-2).

The Rams are back in Skyline play on Saturday (Sept. 28), when they travel to Purchase, N.Y., for a 3 p.m. kickoff at Manhattanville University in a rematch of the 2023 conference championship final.
