2024 Skyline Conference Men's Tennis Championship - Final
(1) Farmingdale State - 5, (2) Manhattanville - 4
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | Top-seeded Farmingdale State College captured its sixth Skyline Conference Men's Tennis Championship – and its second in as many seasons –
on Saturday against second-seeded Manhattanville University, 5-4.
The Rams (17-0) – the first team in Farmingdale State College athletics' NCAA history to end regular-season and conference-championship play undefeated –
have now earned the Skyline's automatic bid to next week's 44-team, 2024 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championship. First-round play begins on Thursday and Friday (May 9 and 10), and the field will be announced via an online selection show on NCAA.com, Monday at 12:30 p.m.
For his play this week, FSC junior
Vansh Aggarwal (Mumbai, India) was named Most Outstanding Player of the Championship. Aggarwal came back from one set down to the Valiants' (10-5) Griffin Forberg in their No. 3 singles tilt to win the championship-clinching match with scores of 6-3 and 6-4 in the final two sets, respectively.
FSC held a 2-1 edge after doubles play, with the senior duo of
Alan Sabovic (Bohemia, N.Y.) and
Matthew Waterhouse (Massapequa Pk., N.Y.) moving to 12-1 on the season with an 8-4 victory in the second flight versus the Valiants' Derwin Guzman and Carter Hunter-Crump. The Rams pushed their lead to 2-0 behind an 8-6 victory at the No. 3 position by senior
Muhammad Sawar (Brentwood, N.Y.) and freshman
Ty Williams (Pt. Jefferson Station, N.Y.). Like Sabovic and Waterhouse, Sawar and Williams also upped their record to 12-1 on the 2023-24 campaign.
Manhattanville pushed ahead 3-2 after earning victories in the fourth and second singles flights, before Sabovic earned a 6-1, 6-3 victory in the No. 1 position against the Valiants' James Hourihan – moving to 16-0 on the season in the process. After Williams carded a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 victory in the fifth flight against Hunter-Crump to push the hosts ahead by a 4-3 margin, Manhattanville knotted things up at 4-all with a victory in the No. 6 slot. That set the stage for Aggarwal's heroics against Forberg, as his match point sent the Rams into celebration mode. The junior has won all 12 of his singles matches to date, including a 9-0 mark at the No. 3 flight.
