PATCHOGUE, N.Y. | The fourth-seeded Farmingdale State baseball team traveled to No. 1 St. Joseph's-Long Island on Friday afternoon for their first game in the four-team, double elimination portion of the 2024 Skyline Conference Championship and earned a 6-1 victory over the hosts. The Rams have advanced to Saturday's 12:00 p.m. winner's bracket game and will play the winner of the Merchant Marine and Manhattanville contest. The Golden Eagles (29-11) play in an elimination game later this evening.
FSC scored in the top of the third inning as freshman catcher
Sean Maldonado (Glen Head, N.Y.) singled and sophomore second baseman
Ryan Wasserman (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) reached on an error. Sophomore right fielder
Richie Heyder (Holbrook, N.Y.) followed with a double down the left field line to to put the Rams up, 2-0. Senior first baseman
Jordan Lambert (Plainview, N.Y.) singled to move Heyder to third before senior third baseman
Tyler DiRocco (Commack, N.Y.) registered a single through the right side to give Farmingdale State a 3-0 edge.
St. Joseph's-Long Island closed the gap with a double and an RBI single in the fourth, but the Rams regained a three-run advantage with an unearned run in the top of the fifth.
The score remained 4-1 until the seventh when senior
Daniel Deutsch (Northport, N.Y.) recorded a two-out RBI single to score DiRocco and extend the FSC lead to four.
In the eighth, the Golden Eagles loaded the bases with two outs before DiRocco moved to the mound and struck out the next batter to escape the jam. He stayed in to pitch the bottom of the ninth, with FSC leading, 6-1, and tallied a strike out and two pop ups to earn his third save of the season.
Senior
Roman Dorosh (Holbrook, N.Y. - W, 4-2, 7.2 IP, 1 ER, 5 SO) threw 7.2 innings on the mound, allowing just one earned run, to lead Farmingdale State to the win.
At the plate, DiRocco registered three hits, an RBI, stolen base and run scored, while Wasserman produced three hits and a run scored. Heyder tallied two hits, a double, two RBI's and two runs and both Deutsch and sophomore left fielder
Greg Friedman (Wading River, N.Y.) had a hit and one run batted in apiece.
