Softball Sweeps John Jay, Extends Winning Streak to Double Digits

Game 1: Farmingdale State 5, John Jay 1
Game 2: Farmingdale State 8, John Jay 3
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State College softball team combined for 24 hits across its doubleheader Thursday, and extended its winning streak to 10 games with a sweep over visiting John Jay College. The Rams (19-7) picked up a 5-1 victory in the opening contest, before capturing an 8-3 decision in the nightcap against the Bloodhounds (19-9).

Prior to the game, student-athletes and staff recognized Farmingdale State College President, Dr. John S. Nader, and his wife, Kathy, for their support of the Rams' athletic programs. A frequent attendee at most FSC athletics events, Dr. Nader began his tenure at the college in 2016, and will be retiring from his position at the end of the academic year.

Game 1

After spotting John Jay a run in the top of the first inning, FSC leveled the game in its half of the frame. Freshman third baseman Bailey Hammock (Pt. Jervis, N.Y.) laced a one-out single to right-center field, and moved up 60 feet on a stolen base. A well-placed sacrifice bunt by senior Angelina Capuano (Sayville, N.Y.) sent Hammock to third base, before she tied the game at 1-all when she advanced home on a wild pitch in the next at-bat.

The Rams took the lead in support of senior starting pitcher Allie Stanya (Babylon, N.Y.) with a three-run third inning, and tacked on one more run in the fourth. Farmingdale State utilized small ball in the third inning to stake Stanya to a 4-1 advantage, as Capuano's bunt up the first-base line brought home senior leadoff hitter Jenna Giliberti (Bellmore, N.Y.), before Hammock came home on a wild pitch for the second time in the contest. From there, sophomore designated player Samantha Stolfi (Pt. Jefferson Station, N.Y.) laid down a sacrifice bunt to the right side, scoring Capuano and giving the hosts a three-run advantage.

In the fourth inning, freshman first baseman Madison Sturtz (E. Islip, N.Y.) hit a one-out double off the right-center field fence, and scored FSC's fifth run of the game on a RBI single by Giliberti.

Stanya moved to 11-2 on the year in the pitcher's circle, scattering four hits and one walk while striking out 10 John Jay batters. Offensively, Giliberti finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate with a stolen base, while Hammock went 2-for-4, swiped two stolen bases and scored as many runs. Sturtz finished 2-for-3 at the dish, and notched her fifth stolen base in as many tries on the season.

Game 2

Farmingdale State jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning to take control out of the gate. Giliberti scored the first run of the game on Capuano's RBI single to center, before a single up the middle by Stolfi (3-for-3, 4 RBI) allowed Capuano to double the FSC's lead. After freshman Anna Rahner (Islip, N.Y.) registered a RBI ground out to the right side of the infield to score pinch-runner Alyssa Cowen (Jr.; Garden City South, N.Y.), junior pitcher Ava Shorr (No. Babylon, N.Y.) notched the fourth run of the inning on an infield single by freshman outfielder Ashley Toro (Islip, N.Y.).

Stolfi's two-run single in the second inning gave FSC a 6-0 edge, before she drove in her fourth run on the game on an infield single in the fourth inning to score Giliberti.

After the Bloodhounds pulled to within a 7-3 count with a three-run fifth inning, Rahner's single through the left side plated pinch-runner Lauren Varagnolo (So.; Centereach, N.Y.) in Farmingdale State's half of the sixth inning.

Shorr upped her record to 7-5 on the season with her complete-game, seven-strikeout pitching performance, while helping herself at the plate with a 3-for-4 showing with one run scored. Toro batted 2-for-3 in the nightcap, while two stolen bases apiece were swiped by Giliberti, Hammock and Capuano.

Head coach Liz Pennino's Rams are back into Skyline Conference play on Saturday, when they travel to Patchogue, N.Y., for a noon twinbill at St. Joseph's University-Long Island.
