FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State College softball team swept its home-opening doubleheader Monday afternoon against Western Connecticut State University, winning the opening game by a 4-2 margin before notching an 8-4 victory in the nightcap.

Game 1

The host Rams struck first blood in the bottom of the first inning, as leadoff hitter Jenna Giliberti (Sr.; Bellmore, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch and stole second base. After moving up 60 feet on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Bailey Hammock (Pt. Jervis, N.Y.), Giliberti gave FSC the lead for good when she came home on a wild pitch.

Farmingdale State added two more runs in the third inning, bumping its lead to 3-0. Giliberti reached on a two-out single into the shortstop hole, before coming all the way around on a single to the right-center field gap by Hammock. Hammock moved to third on a throwing error, and crossed the plate when senior Angelina Capuano (Sayville, N.Y.) reached base on a Wolves miscue to push the FSC edge to three runs.

WestConn scratched across one run in both the top of the fourth and sixth innings, the Rams added an insurance run in the home half of the sixth. Freshman catcher Anna Rahner (Islip, N.Y.) ripped a two-out double to deep left field, and scored on a single to center by classmate Ashley Toro (Islip, N.Y.) to up the Farmingdale State lead to 4-2.

After six strong innings of work in the pitching circle by senior Allie Stanya (Babylon, N.Y.), junior Ava Shorr (No. Babylon, N.Y.) pitched around a one-out hit by pitch in the seventh inning to earn her second save of the season.

Giliberti was 2-for-2 with a hit by pitch and a pair of runs in the opening contest, while Hammock, Rahner, Toro and sophomore Samantha Stolfi (Pt. Jefferson Station, N.Y.) each notched one hit. Stanya moved to 5-2 on the season, scattering five hits and two walks while striking out eight Wolves hitters.

Game 2

Farmingdale State (8-6) overcame a pair of two-run deficits, and scored the final six runs of the nightcap to move its winning streak to four games.

The Wolves (7-9) opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning, before the Rams responded with a pair in the bottom of the second to level the game at 2-all. Shorr ripped a one-out single up the middle, before Rahner laced a single to left that went past the WestConn fielder to score Shorr with FSC's first run. After Rahner moved to third base on a single by freshman Madison Sturtz (E. Islip, N.Y.), Toro's bunt single up the third-base line allowed Rahner to score the tying run.

Western Connecticut went ahead 4-2 with a two-run third inning, before Farmingdale State notched three runs apiece in the fourth and sixth frames en route to the win. In the fourth, Shorr led off with a walk and crossed the plate on Rahner's double into the right-center field gap to cut the hosts' deficit to 4-3. Rahner and Sturtz, who reached on a walk, both scored on freshman Isabella Marchini's (Hicksville, N.Y.) to right-center, giving the Rams a 5-4 lead that they would not relinquish.

In the sixth inning, a one-out triple to left-center by Toro plated Stanya and Sturtz, before Marchini's single through the left side scored Toro to account for the 8-4 final score.

Shorr, Rahner and Sturtz all went 2-for-2 with a pair of runs in the contest, with Toro and Marchini each going 2-for-3 at the dish with three RBI. Shorr upped her record to 3-4 in the pitching circle on the season with a complete-game four-hitter, allowing two earned runs and fanning seven Western Connecticut batters.

Head coach Liz Pennino's Farmingdale State side will turn around and play host to SUNY New Paltz in a Tuesday (March 26) doubleheader, with first pitch slated for 3:30 p.m.
