SOFTBALL SCHEDULE/RESULTS
CLERMONT, FL | The Farmingdale State softball team has played four games at The Spring Games in Clermont, Florida. The Rams have six more games on the schedule before heading home on Sunday.
Sunday, March 10
Â
Farmingdale State opened its trip with a 5-1 victory over Lasell (Mass.), using a three-run first inning and a two-run second frame to support senior right-handed pitcher
Allie Stanya (Babylon, N.Y.).
Â
Senior right fielder
Jenna Giliberti (Bellmore, N.Y.) opened the season with a double to right-center field, and moved up 60 feet on a sacrifice by freshman first baseman
Madison Sturtz (E. Islip, N.Y.). Giliberti came home in the next at-bat on a wild pitch, before the Rams tacked on another pair of runs with two outs. Sophomore designated player
Samantha Stolfi (Pt. Jefferson Station, N.Y.) singled up the middle, before moving to second on a walk issued to freshman catcher
Anna Rahner (Islip, N.Y.). Both runners moved up one base apiece on an infield error, before a two-run single to right by freshman
Bailey Hammock (Pt. Jervis, N.Y.) in her FSC debut at-bat scored Stolfi and Rahner to give her team a 3-0 advantage.
Â
In the second inning, freshman
Isabella Marchini (Hicksville, N.Y.) led off with a single to left-center field, before Stanya reached base on a walk. Both runners came home on Giliberti's second double to right-center in as many at-bats, staking Farmingdale State to a 5-0 edge.
Â
Lasell scored one run on a double-steal attempt in the top of the third, but was unable to solve Stanya the rest of the way, as the senior tossed a complete-game five-hitter with one walk and four strikeouts over her 104-pitch (68 strikes) effort.Â
Â
Giliberti and Hammock each finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate, with Hammock adding a stolen base. Freshman outfielder
Ashley Toro (Islip, N.Y.) added a 1-for-3 showing in her collegiate debut.
Â
In FSC's second game of the day, they faced the reigning National Pitcher of the Year, Kayla Simacek, and the 11th-ranked Royals of Bethel University.
Rams' junior pitcher
Ava Shorr (North Babylon, N.Y.) matched Simacek over the first three innings as the game went scoreless into the fourth.Â
Bethel scratched across a run in the bottom of the fourth on a two-out RBI single to go up, 1-0.
After Farmingdale State was set down in order in the top of the fifth, a three-run home run by the Royals in the bottom half gave them a 4-0 advantage.
FSC put a runner in scoring position in the seventh inning on a double by Giliberti, but were unable to score as they fell, 4-0.
Monday, March 11
The Rams fell to Fredonia, 4-3, in their first game on Monday before dropping a 1-0 contest to Montclair State later in the day.
FSC jumped ahead of the Devils in the first inning after Sturtz and Rahner recorded RBI singles to go up, 2-0.
Fredonia trailed 2-1 in the fifth and took the lead on back-to-back doubles and an RBI single.
Farmingdale State was still down 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh, before Giliberti doubled, stole third and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Sturtz to tie the game.
In extra innings, the Devils quickly regained the lead after a double to start the eighth scored the automatic runner from second.Â
The Rams moved their runner to third after a leadoff sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the eighth, but were unable to score in the next two at-bats as they fell, 4-3.
Giliberti recorded two hits, two runs scored and three stolen bases, while Sturtz had a hit with two runs batted in.Â
