FARMINGDALE, N.Y. |Â The top-seeded Farmingdale State men's basketball team defeated fifth-seeded Sarah Lawrence College, 81-66, in a Skyline Conference Championship semifinal Thursday night to earn its spot in the championship final for the second-straight season.
The defending-champion Rams (25-2) will face second-seeded Yeshiva, a semifinal winner over Manhattanville, in Sunday's championship final at 1 p.m.
Admission to this weekend's championship final remains the same as it was for the semifinal round: $8 for adults, $4 for seniors and children, and free for Skyline Conference students with a valid ID. The winner of the title match-up will earn the Skyline's automatic bid into next weekend's 2024 NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship.
The two teams traded baskets early, with FSC trailing to the Gryphons (14-13) 18-17 eight minutes in. On the next two FSC possessions, senior guard
Aaron Davis (Valley Stream, N.Y.) made a jumper and freshman forward
Liam Buckley (Manhasset, N.Y.) knocked down a 3-pointer to go ahead, 22-18.Â
Following a SLC jumper, Rams seniors
Jovayne Walters (Cambria Heights, N.Y.) and
Nick Hurowitz (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) made layups to take a six-point edge at 26-20 with nine minutes on the clock.
Sarah Lawrence responded with an 11-4 run to regain the advantage, 31-30. From there, senior guard
Corey Powell (Valley Stream, N.Y.) followed with back-to-back jumpers, before Hurowitz converted a 3-point play to put the host side ahead, 37-31, with 3:42 showing on the scoreboard. The teams traded points for the rest of the half, with Farmingdale State carrying a 43-36 advantage into the break behind 11 points from Hurowitz.
The second half started with back-to-back layups by Hurowitz inside the first three minutes, before consecutive 3-pointers from the Gryphons started a 10-2 spread for the visitors, who sliced their deficit to 49-48 with 14:52 left. Powell knocked down a layup 70 seconds later, starting an 11-2 run over a 3:05 stretch by FSC as it went ahead 60-50 on a driving lay-in by senior point guard
Jevon Santos (Elmont, N.Y.) at the 10:42 mark. The Rams later pulled away for good with seven-straight points over a 2:06 stretch, to go up 72-56 with five minutes remaining. Freshman forward
Kentrell Evans scored consecutive layups at the 7:08 and 6:30 marks, respectively, before Davis buried a 29-footer from the left side with the shot clock winding down to cap the spurt.
Four FSC players scored in double figures on the night, led by an 8-of-13 performance from the field by Powell en route to 18 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots. Hurowitz (8-of-15 FG, game-high-tying 9 reb., 4 asst.) added 17, while Santos (4 asst.) and Evans (5-of-7 FG, 6 reb., 3 blocked shots) registered 10 apiece. The Rams took great care of the ball on the night, assisting on 16 field goals while turning the ball over to Sarah Lawrence just four times. FSC shot .532 (33-of-62) from the floor and held a 38-36 edge on the glass, scoring 18 second-chance points in the process.
