Women's Basketball Falls in Skyline First Round at Mount Saint Vincent

2024 Skyline Conference Championship - First Round
(3) Mount Saint Vincent 73, (6) Farmingdale State 68
RIVERDALE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State College women's basketball team saw its season come to a close in the first round of the Skyline Conference Championship on Tuesday night, as the sixth-seeded Rams fell to third-seeded host Mount Saint Vincent, 73-68.

FSC (11-15) jumped out to a 23-14 lead after one quarter of play, using a 14-4 run over the last five minutes that included 3-pointers by senior Emily Pohalski (Huntington, N.Y.) and sophomore Adrianna Romo-Leroux (Selden, N.Y.). A 9-2 spurt in the first four minutes of the second period lifted the visitors over the Dolphins (20-8) by 14 (32-18), before the hosts chipped away to pull to within a 38-32 margin at halftime.

Mendoza canned a pair of free throws to start the third period before a 3-pointer by freshman Taneece Wooden (Freeport, N.Y.) two minutes in put the Rams up by double digits, 43-32. A 9-2 spread midway through the period helped Farmingdale State to take a 57-44 lead into the final 10 minutes of action.

Wooden put home a layup 33 seconds into the final frame, before Mendoza's jumper gave the Rams their largest lead of the night, 61-44, with 8:50 to go in the contest. From there, Mount Saint Vincent ripped off an 18-2 run to pull within one. Freshman guard Mia Simmons (Jamaica, N.Y.) drove the middle of the lane for a layup with 90 seconds left, pushing FSC's advantage back to three at 65-62, with 1:30 left. The Dolphins scored underneath the basket in their next trip down the court, and knocked down nine free throws over the last 54.6 seconds of play to escape with the triumph. Mount Saint Vincent will next travel to second-seeded Mount Saint Mary College for a 7 p.m. semifinal on Thursday (Feb. 22).

Emily Pohalski was 4-of-5 from the floor and 3-of-3 from long range en route to a game-high 16 points and seven rebounds, while Wooden (5-of-9 FG, 2-of-2 3FG) chipped in with 13 points and seven boards. Mendoza registered nine points and six caroms, with Greenwald going a perfect 3-of-3 from the field (2-of-2 from 3-point land) to add eight points for the Rams.
