Layla Mendoza (Westhampton Beach, N.Y.) scored a team-high 23 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead the FSC women's basketball team to their eighth Skyline Conference win of the season, 80-68, over St. Joseph's-Brooklyn on Wednesday. The Rams improved to 10-13 overall and 8-10 in the conference.
In a high-scoring first quarter, the Rams fell behind 22-13 before a 6-0 run cut the deficit to just six. Mendoza and sophomore guard
Julia Dessart (Smithtown, N.Y.) tallied layups and senior guard
Emily Pohalski (Huntington, N.Y.) knocked down two free-throws to close the quarter.
In the second, FSC opened with back-to-back layups by junior guard
Isabella Greenwald (West Islip, N.Y.) and freshman forward
Taneece Wooden (Freeport, N.Y.) to take a 23-22 advantage.
The game was tied at 28-28 with 3:13 on the clock before a Mendoza layup and a 3-pointer by
Victoria Kantzian (Staten Island, N.Y.) gave Farmingdale State a five-point lead.
The Rams led 35-33 at the halftime break and tallied the first 12 points of the third quarter to take a 14-point advantage at 47-33. Wooden, Pohalski and
Gemma Pohalski (Huntington, N.Y.) each produced layups before Mendoza and freshman guard
Mia Simmons (Jamaica, N.Y.) registered three points each.
FSC took the 14-point lead, 54-40, into the fourth and used a Wooden 3-pointer and a three-point play by Mendoza, in a 6-2 run, to go up by 18, 60-42.
Farmingdale State maintained at least an nine-point edge in the final eight minutes as they went on for the 80-68 victory.
Mendoza shot 9-for-17 from the field and 2-for-2 from behind the arc en route to her team-high 23 points. E Pohalski nearly recorded a triple-double as she finished with 11 points, 12 rebounds, eight assists and two steals, while Wooden produced 11 points, four rebounds and two assists. Simmons tallied 10 points off the bench and G Pohalski ended with six points, three assists and two steals. Dessart added four points, seven rebounds and three steals in the victory.
FSC is right back at it tomorrow night when they play host to Mount Saint Vincent in a Skyline game at 6:00 p.m.
