THROGGS NECK, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State College men's basketball team fell in its Skyline Conference opener Saturday afternoon, as host Maritime College used a late second-half run to score a 71-57 victory over the Rams.
After trailing 13-4 five minutes into play, FSC (2-5, 0-1 Skyline) stormed back to take a 31-23 lead into halftime. The Rams registered 16 straight points against the Privateers (5-2, 1-0), taking a 20-13 edge on a 3-pointer by freshman guard
Michael Spisto (Staten Island, N.Y.), and extended the lead to 13 points when classmate
Jordan Tucker (Elmont, N.Y.) converted a steal and lay-in with 2:45 remaining.
Maritime scored 16 of the first 18 points of the second half, pushing ahead by a 39-33 count with 12:39 left. Farmingdale State responded with a 13-2 run of its own, holding a 45-41 lead at the 9:31 mark following back-to-back 3-pointers by juniors
Michael Notias (Manhasset, N.Y.) and
Sean Conroy (Staten Island, N.Y.). The Privateers then pushed ahead for good with a game-deciding 12-0 run over a 2:45 stretch, breaking a 50-all deadlock and leading by double figures from the 3:41 mark on.
Conroy (five rebounds) and Notias finished with 13 and 12 points, respectively, with Spisto notching a season-high eight points in 17 minutes off the bench. Tucker and sophomore
Liam Buckley (Manhasset, N.Y.) scored seven points apiece, while senior big
Hamdel Mohammed (Bronx, N.Y.) swiped three steals in the low post on defense.
