No. 14 New York University - 70, Farmingdale State - 61
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State College men's basketball team dropped a non-conference game, 70-61, to No. 14 ranked New York University on Tuesday evening. FSC fell to 2-3 overall, while the Violets improved to a perfect 5-0.
NYU took a 21-12 advantage midway through the first half before the Rams responded with a pair of
Derek Reed (Shinnecock, N.Y.) jumpers and one from junior guard
Sean Conroy (Staten Island, N.Y.) to cut the deficit to just three.
The Violets led 26-22 with 5:30 on the clock and used back-to-back 3-pointers to extend their advantage to 10, 32-22.
Farmingdale State was down 39-28 and closed the half on an 8-1 run as they trailed 40-36 at the break. Junior guard
Michael Notias (Manhasset, N.Y.) hit a 3-pointer before NYU tallied their lone point of the run on a free-throw. With five seconds remaining, a steal by senior guard
Jevon Santos (Elmont, N.Y.) led to a Conroy 3-pointer. On the inbound pass, Santos stole the ball again and registered a layup at the buzzer to cut the NYU lead to four. He had four steals through the first 20 minutes.
The Rams opened the second half with a Conroy 3-pointer to quickly close within one, 40-39. The two teams traded baskets over the next three minutes before a 3 by NYU allowed them to regain a four-point edge, 49-45.
The Violets still led by four, 55-51, with 12:51 to play and went on an 11-0 run to take a commanding 66-51 advantage.
FSC trailed 68-54 and chipped away with seven unanswered points, including four by freshman guard
Jordan Tucker (Elmont, N.Y.), to make it a seven-point game at 68-61.
Neither team registered a basket over the final 3:56 as a pair of NYU free-throws in the final seconds accounted for the 70-61 final score.
Senior forward
Hamdel Mohammed (Bronx, N.Y.) led Farmingdale State with 14 points, eight rebounds and two blocks, while Conroy produced 10 points and two assists. Notias registered nine points, four rebounds and two assists and sophomore forward
Kentrell Evans (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished with eight points and six rebounds. Santos added eight points, three rebounds, four assists and a career-high five steals in the loss.
NYU was led by Tristan How, who ended with a game-high 21 points on 9-for-13 shooting.
The Rams next will travel to Wesleyan University for a non-conference game on Saturday, November 30th at 2:00 p.m.
