Women's Basketball Falls to Mount Saint Mary in Skyline Opener

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State College women's basketball team opened Skyline Conference play with a home game versus Mount Saint Mary College on Wednesday evening and fell by a score of 73-56.

The Rams (2-3, 0-1 Skyline) were behind 17-7 after the first six minutes of play before using a layup by sophomore guard Mia Simmons (Queens, N.Y.) and a 3-pointer from sophomore forward Taneece Wooden (Freeport, N.Y.) to cut their deficit to five.

The Knights (1-1, 1-0 Skyline) regained a nine-point lead, 22-13, early in the second, but back-to-back 3's by Wooden allowed Farmingdale State to close within three at 22-19.

Down 26-22 with three minutes remaining in the second, Wooden produced a pair of driving layups to tie the score at 26-26.

Following two MSMC free-throws, Simmons registered a bucket and senior guard Isabella Greenwald (West Islip, N.Y.) hit a 3 to give FSC their first lead of the day at 31-28.

The Rams closed the half with a layup by Alexandria Walbroehl (Mastic Beach, N.Y.) and two Wooden free-throws as they led by six, 35-29, at the break. Wooden led all scorers with 16 points in the first 20 minutes of play.

Mount Saint Mary came out strong in the second half, scoring the first 13 points to jump in front, 42-35.

Farmingdale State closed to within three at 43-40, but the Knights went on a 9-4 run to take a 52-44 advantage into the fourth.

MSMC extended their lead to 12, 58-46, before two Walbroehl free-throws stopped the run. Mount Saint Mary maintained at least a 10-point lead the remainder of the game as they earned the 73-56 victory.

Wooden produced a season-best 22 points on 7-for-15 shooting to go with a team-high 10 rebounds. Simmons had nine points and two assists, while Walbroehl tallied eight points and six boards. Senior guard Gemma Pohalski (Huntington, N.Y.) recorded eight points, nine rebounds, four assists and two steals and classmate Erin Conte (Melville, N.Y.) added three rebounds and three assists in her season debut.

FSC will next play host to St. Joseph's-Brooklyn for a Skyline game on Saturday, November 23rd at noon.
