Strong Second Half Leads SJLI Past Farmingdale State

St. Joseph's-Long Island - 3, Farmingdale State - 1
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | A three-goal second half sent visiting St. Joseph's-Long Island past Farmingdale State, 3-1, in a Skyline Conference men's soccer match on Saturday afternoon. The Rams fell to 2-2-2 in conference play, while the Golden Eagles remain undefeated at 5-0.

SJLI (6-1-2) nearly opened the scoring in the 11th minute after a chip shot went over the head of FSC (5-5-3) goalkeeper Anthony Martinez (Bay Shore, N.Y.). Rams' sophomore defender Omar Hernandez (Brentwood, N.Y.) sprinted back and cleared the ball before it reached the goal line.

Farmingdale State upped the pressure over the next 10 minutes, attempting five unanswered shots. The Rams broke the scoreless tie in the 25th minute after senior midfielder Rafael Castro (Cartagena, Colombia) sent a kick down field. The ball was misplayed on a header by a St. Joe's defender and it landed at the feet of freshman forward Jean Mejia (Freeport, N.Y.). Mejia's shot was saved on a dive by Golden Eagles' goalie Giuseppe Vitale, but Rams' senior Olvin Yanes (Selden, N.Y.) was there to bury the rebound and give FSC the 1-0 lead.

In the final minute of the half, St. Joe's-LI sent two shots off the left post but were unable to find the back of the net as Farmingdale State led 1-0 at the break.

The Golden Eagles quickly tied the score just 5:41 into the second half after a corner kick landed in the box. Martinez stopped the first shot before St. Joe's Sean Gordon buried the rebound to knot the score at 1-1.

The match remained 1-1 into the 73rd minute when a through pass led to a goal by SJLI's Daniel Dacos.

FSC senior forward Anthony Bileddo (Carle Place, N.Y.) sent two shots on goal in the 80th and 83rd minutes as the Rams pushed for the equalizer but could not score.

With 6:31 remaining, the Golden Eagles secured the match with a give-and-go goal as they went on for the 3-1 victory.

Martinez finished with a season-high seven saves, while Vitale stopped six shots.

The Rams will next play host to Purchase College for a Skyline Conference match on Wednesday, October 9th at 4:00 p.m.
