PURCHASE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State women's tennis team tallied a 7-0 shutout at Purchase College on Saturday to improve to a perfect 5-0 in Skyline Conference play. The win sets the stage for a crucial match at fellow undefeated team Manhattanville on Saturday, October 26th, which will determine the No. 1 seed for the playoffs.
The Rams rolled through doubles play with a 6-3 win in the top-flight match by sophomore
Natalia Furchel (Manorville, N.Y.) and junior
Amanda Jones (Mastic Beach, N.Y.). They followed with a pair of 6-0 victories in the second and third matches with senior
Lien Collings (Merrick, N.Y.) and junior
Gabriella Loria (Levittown, N.Y.) capturing the second match and juniors
MacKenzie Gisler (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) andÂ
Mikayla DeMaria (West Babylon, N.Y.) securing the third match.
FSC cruised through singles play with Collings (6-1, 6-2), Furchel (6-1, 6-1), Jones (6-3, 6-1) and Gisler (6-1, 6-1) tallying victories in the first through fourth matches. DeMaria produced a 6-1, 6-0 win in No. 6 singles, but the highlight of the match came from Loria in the fifth slot.
After losing the first set 6-3 and trailing 5-2 in the second, Loria fought off match points to tie the score at 6-6. In the second set tiebreaker, Loria won seven-of-eight points to force a super tie-breaker. She was down 9-5, but once again made a remarkable comeback with six unanswered points to clinch the tie-breaker, 11-9, and secure the 7-0 shutout for FSC.
The Rams will next play host to non-conference opponent Hunter College on Wednesday, October 23rd at 4:30 p.m. FSC will conclude the regular season schedule with a road match at Manhattanville on Saturday, October 26th to determine the No. 1 seed and home-court advantage for the upcoming Skyline Conference Championship.
