Amanda Jones (Mastic Beach, N.Y.), the Farmingdale State College women's tennis team edged visiting Russell Sage College on Tuesday night, 4-3.
The visiting Gators (6-2) earned the doubles point with a pair of victories to start the contest, after FSC's (5-3) third-flight tandem of juniors
Gabriella Loria (Levittown, N.Y.) and
Mikayla DeMaria (West Babylon, N.Y.) opened the evening by blanking counterparts Jessica Korbieh and Amber Elk, 6-0.
DeMaria (vs. Katie Snell) and Loria (vs. Korbieh) earned identical 6-0, 6-0 victories in the sixth and fifth singles flights, respectively, to start singles play for the hosts. Junior
MacKenzie Gisler (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) then put Farmingdale State up by a 3-1 count with her identical 6-2 set scores against fourth-flight opponent Emma Vander Baan, before Russell Sage knotted the team match at 3-all with victories in the top-two flights. That set the stage for Jones's come-from-behind heroics in the No. 3 slot against Olivia Monaco, who went ahead by a 6-3 score in the first set. Jones battled back with a 6-2 decision in the second frame, before capturing her fourth singles victory in her last five outings with a 6-4 win in the third set to clinch the match for the Rams.
FSC has now won four of its last five matches, and is back in home non-conference action on Thursday (Oct. 3), when it plays host to Baruch College in a 4:30 p.m. first serve.
