Women's Basketball Runs Past Skyline Foe Purchase

Farmingdale State - 72; Purchase - 45
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | Leading by 15 at halftime, the Farmingdale State College women's basketball used a 22-2 advantage in the third period Saturday afternoon to run past Skyline Conference foe Purchase College by a 72-45 final.

After the Rams (6-10, 4-7 Skyline) received five straight points from senior forward Layla Mendoza (Westhampton Beach, N.Y.) late in the first quarter to hold a 17-12 lead, they stretched their advantage to a 37-24 margin at the interval behind a 10-point, nine-rebound half by freshman forward Taneece Wooden (Freeport, N.Y.). The double-digit edge opened up courtesy of a 10-0 run midway through the second frame, with Mendoza (8-of-12 FG, seven rebounds, three steals) dropping in six of her game-high 21 points during the stretch.

Mendoza's free throw 2:56 into the third period opened the second-half scoring, and kick-started a 22-2 period for the hosts in which they limited the Panthers (1-14, 1-11) to a 1-of-10 effort from the field and converted 10 PC turnovers into 15 points. Sophomore guard Victoria Kantzian (Staten Island, N.Y.) knocked down a pair of 3-pointers in the quarter, while junior Gemma Pohalski (Huntington, N.Y.) and Mendoza each added five, as the Rams brought a 59-26 lead into the final 10-minute session.

Wooden notched her seventh double-double of the season on 14 points and a game-high 13 boards, with Pohalski chipping in with seven points, eight caroms (seven offensive), a game-best five steals, four assists and two blocked shots. Kantzian finished the afternoon with eight points and four helpers, while junior Jenna Pignataro (Farmingville, N.Y.) and freshman Mia Simmons (Jamaica, N.Y.) scored seven apiece.

Head coach Mark Dellecave's FSC side continues Skyline Conference play Tuesday night (Jan. 23), when it travels to Bronxville, N.Y., for a 7 p.m. start at Sarah Lawrence College.
