Volleyball Downs Rutgers-Newark in Four Sets

Farmingdale State - 3; Rutgers-Newark - 1 (25-27, 25-13, 25-12, 25-17)
NEWARK, N.J. | With four players registering double-digit points Thursday night at The Golden Dome, the Farmingdale State College volleyball team picked up a four-set victory at host Rutgers University-Newark (25-27, 25-13, 25-12, 25-17).

The visiting Rams (1-2) received 20 points from senior middle blocker Kalena Ricketts (Cambria Hts., N.Y.) on a match-best 18 kills to go with two service aces, while junior middle Mikayla Profeta (W. Islip, N.Y.) hit a team-best .242 on 13 kills and three aces. Senior outside hitter Madeline Stanley (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) set career-highs with 11 kills and 14.5 points, while freshman led all players with six aces and chipped in with five kills. On the evening, FSC tallied 17 aces, while its defense -- led by eight digs apiece from Profeta and junior libero Lana Ventura (Pt. Washington, N.Y.; three aces) -- held the Scarlet Raiders scoreless on the service line.

Following an extra-time, 27-25 set in favor of Rutgers-Newark, Farmingdale State used strong runs early on in the next three sets to capture the victory. Profeta served her side to five-consecutive points to set the tone in the second frame, with a late five-point surge at the line by DeJesus helped propel the Rams to a 12-point decision to knot the match at 1-all.

Two aces by DeJesus during a seven-point swing pushed the visitors in front 15-4 in set three, with the momentum in set four shifting during a six-point showing, where three-straight kills by Ricketts down the middle placed FSC ahead by a commanding 16-8 margin.

Head coach Kellie Block's Farmingdale State returns home to the Walter A. Lynch Sports Center on Tuesday (Sept. 12), when it plays host to Western Connecticut State University for a 6 p.m. first serve.
