Jevon Santos (Elmont, N.Y.) hit a
game-winning 3-pointer with 2.8 seconds remaining to lead the Rams past non-conference opponent Wesleyan (CT) University, 73-70. The Rams improved to 5-1 on the season, while the Cardinals took their first loss and now sit at 4-1 overall.
FSC came out quick as they opened up a 16-9 advantage just over five minutes in, with senior guards
Corey Powell (Valley Stream, N.Y.) and
Aaron Davis (Valley Stream, N.Y.) tallying five points apiece.
Over the next six minutes of play, the Cardinals held Farmingdale State scoreless, while recording 15 consecutive points to jump in front, 24-16.
The Rams trailed 29-24 with 4:47 on the clock and closed the half on a 12-5 run, as FSC led by two, 36-34, at the halftime break.
Still leading by two, 41-39, early in the second half, Farmingdale State recorded eight straight points to go in front by 10, 49-39.
Wesleyan quickly responded with five consecutive baskets to regain the lead, 50-49.
The two teams traded baskets over the next nine minutes, with the Cardinals holding a 68-65 lead with 2:15 to play. After a timeout by the Rams, FSC senior forward
Nick Hurowitz (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) hit a game-tying 3-pointer.
Each team made a basket on their next possession to make it 70-70, before Farmingdale State got a defensive stop with 40 seconds remaining.
The Rams missed a layup with 15 seconds on the clock, but senior forward
Jovayne Walters (Cambria Heights, N.Y.) was able to pull down his fifth offensive rebound of the game.
Santos received the ball from Walters, drove his defender back and hit a pull-up 3-pointer to give FSC the lead.
Wesleyan missed on their final shot attempt as Farmingdale State earned the 73-70 victory.
Santos finished with nine points, five assists and two steals, while Davis led the team with 19 points. Hurowitz registered 15 points and seven rebounds and Powell produced 14 points and five rebounds. Walters tallied season-high's with nine points, 13 rebounds, two assists and three blocked shots in the victory.
The Cardinals were led by junior forward Jared Langs, who produced 20 points and nine rebounds.
The Rams will next play host to non-conference opponent New Jersey City on Monday, November 27th at 6:00 p.m.
