FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State College volleyball team picked up a 3-0 victory (25-13, 25-22, 25-20) against visiting Sarah Lawrence College in Skyline Conference play Thursday night at the Walter A. Lynch Sports Center.
The host Rams (7-10, 5-2 Skyline) received 20.5 points from senior middle blocker
Kalena Ricketts (Cambria Hts., N.Y.), who put down 19 kills on .250 hitting against the Gryphons (7-7, 4-2). Junior middle
Mikayla Profeta (W. Islip, N.Y.) added 12 kills, eight digs, two service aces and two total blocks (one solo), while freshman setter
Sarah Rende (Wantagh, N.Y.) dished out 35 assists for a FSC offense that hit .197 on the evening. Junior libero
Lana Ventura (Pt. Washington, N.Y.) and Rende paced the back-row play for the Rams with 13 and 12 digs, respectively.
FSC took the first set by 12 points, hitting .200 along the way with 14 kills and four service aces. With the score 6-5, the Rams pulled away with eight-consecutive points off the serving of Ventura, who collected two aces during the stretch, as well as three kills from Profeta.
In set two, a 12-all count was broken open by a five-serve stint from Rams junior outside
Jenya Surlin (E. Meadow, N.Y.) to put the hosts ahead for good. Sarah Lawrence battled to within a 24-22 deficit late on, before Rende gave Farmingdale State, which hit .244 (16-6-41) in the frame, a 2-0 advantage on a tip play at the net.
The third stanza went the way of the home side, with Profeta's six-serve run breaking a 12-12 deadlock to give FSC a lead it would not relinquish.
Head coach Kellie Block's Farmingdale State squad is next in Skyline action Tuesday (Oct. 17), when it plays host to Yeshiva University in a 6 p.m. first serve.
