Thompson Leads Rams to Opening Day Victory

Farmingdale, N.Y. - Sophomore forward Ashley Thompson (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal for Farmingdale State with 14:49 remaining against SUNY Geneseo in the first game of the 2013 Rams Classic.

After a scoreless first half, the Knights (0-1) were unable to convert on a breakaway opportunity with 32:44 left on the clock as sophomore goalkeeper Breanna Blair (Littleton, Colo.) made a diving save 20 yards in front of the net. Farmingdale State (1-0) took a 1-0 lead 17:55 later as Thompson converted the feed from sophomore Katlyn Merino (Corona, N.Y.). The Rams held the Knights to one shot the remainder of the game en route to the 1-0 opening day victory.

Blair tallied five saves in the victory, while senior goalkeeper Julia Sanger (Penfield, N.Y.) had four saves in the loss.

Farmingdale State next will face Skidmore on Saturday, August 31st at 10:00 a.m. for the final day of the 2013 Rams Classic. After Farmingdale State's game, Buffalo State will play Emmanuel at noon followed by Western Connecticut vs. SUNY Geneseo at 2:00 p.m.
