Rams Fall in Season Opener at Scranton

Scranton, Penn. - The Farmingdale State men's lacrosse team fell in their 2011 season opener, 12-6, at the University of Scranton in a non-conference game.

Sophomore attack Steven Suris (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) gave the Rams an early 1-0 lead as he scored off the pass from senior attack Wes Hubschmitt (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) less than five minutes into the contest. Scranton's Keenan Dowd (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic) answered with three consecutive unassisted goals, putting the Royals (2-0) ahead 3-1 midway through the first period. Farmingdale's Jimmy Owsinski (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) cut the deficit to 3-2 after being setup by junior attack Erick Thomson (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park) with 1:08 remaining.   

Hubschmitt and junior midfielder Shannon Robinson (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) put the Rams on top 4-3 after scoring back-to-back goals to start the second period. The Royals scored six times over the final 10:50 and took a 9-4 advantage into halftime.

Dowd scored his fourth and the game's only goal in the third period, as the Royals took a 10-4 lead. Farmingdale State closed to 11-6 late, but fell 12-6 in the non-conference matchup.

Suris and Owsinski each scored two goals for the Rams, while Hubschmitt tallied one goal and one assist. Junior goalkeeper Patrick Delventhal (Westbury, N.Y./Holy Trinity) had 15 saves.

Scranton was led by Dowd who scored a game-high four goals, while sophomore attack Taylor Nelson (Chester Springs, Penn./Downingtown East) and junior attack Daniel Slade (Doylestown, Penn./Central Bucks East) each netted two.

Farmingdale State next will host Plattsburgh State in their home opener on Sunday, March 6th at 1:00 p.m.
