Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State baseball team
swept Old Westbury today in a Skyline Conference doubleheader to
improve to 8-10 overall, 4-0 in the conference. Rams senior left
hander Ian Solomon (Northport, N.Y./Northport) and sophomore right
hander Chris Phelan (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) pitched the
victories, while senior designated hitter Mike Labrozzi (Sag
Harbor, N.Y./Pierson) hit a grand slam in game one.
In the first game of the day (9-inning game), Farmingdale
trailed 3-1 in the fifth before a seven run rally on four hits put
the Rams ahead 8-3. Senior centerfielder Frank Yera (Manhattan,
N.Y./Grand Street Campus) brought in the first two runs with a
bases loaded single up the middle to score senior leftfielder Donny
Moscatelli (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) and senior rightfielder
Vinny Block (Merrick, N.Y./Chaminade).
The next batter, senior catcher Zak Nersesian (Valley Cottage,
N.Y./Nyack), knocked in the third run of the inning with a single
to right field, scoring junior second baseman Gibran Bracamonte
(Bronx, N.Y./Grand Street Campus) from second base. After a stolen
third base by Yera, a walk by junior first baseman Kevin Curtis
(Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead) would once again load the bases for
Labrozzi's 2-2 pitch grand slam over the left field fence.
The Rams scored an unearned run in the sixth inning for the 9-3
advantage and then scored two more runs in the seventh. Nersesian
scored on a balk and Curtis scored on a single to centerfield by
Moscatelli.
Senior righthander Mike Biasi (Copiague, N.Y./Copiague) relieved
Solomon for the final two innings, allowing just two hits and
striking out two to preserve the win. Senior lefthander Dan Fordyce
(Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) got the loss for the Panthers.
In game two (7-inning game), the Rams' Phelan allowed one run in
the first inning, but would shut out Old Westbury over the next
four as he went 5.1 innings and struck out four batters for the win
to improve his record to 2-2.
Farmingdale scored two runs in the second and three runs in the
third to roll to the 5-1 victory. Sophomore third baseman Ryan
McAllister (Miller Place, N.Y./Rocky Point) brought in the
game-tying run in the second with a single up the middle to score
junior shortstop Brandon Cruz (Bronx, N.Y./Mt. St. Michael), before
sophomore second baseman Danny DeVito (Plainview, N.Y./Holy
Trinity) followed with a triple down the rightfield line to score
McAllister. In the third, Labrozzi doubled to left centerfield to
bring in Curtis and Nersesian, while Cruz hit a sacrifice fly to
score the final run of the game.
Freshman left hander Abel Guerrero (Bronx, N.Y./James Monroe)
got the loss for the Panthers over 2.2 innings allowing five runs.
The Rams will now host #10 Kean University in a single 9-inning
game on Wednesday, March 24th at 3:30 p.m.
