Box Score Rams Drop Season Opener in Overtime
Western Connecticut - 13, Farmingdale State - 11
Danbury, Conn. - The Farmingdale State women's lacrosse
team fell, 13-11, in overtime at Western Connecticut in their
season opener yesterday afternoon. It was a close contest
throughout with neither team falling behind by more than two goals.
Western Connecticut (3-0) led 6-5 at halftime, but freshman
midfielder Emily Williams (Centerport, N.Y./Harborfields) scored
two quick second half goals for Farmingdale, putting the Rams ahead
7-6. Freshman attack Devon Edwards (Islip, N.Y./Islip) scored an
unassisted goal for the Colonials to tie the game 7-7 at the 25:14
mark. Sophomore midfielder Kim Rigney (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North)
scored off the pass from Justine Rothar (Levittown, N.Y./Division
Ave.) less then a minute later, to give the Rams the lead once
again.
Trailing 11-10 with 38 seconds to play, Williams scored her
fourth goal of the game for the Rams on a break away down the
middle of the field, to even the score at 11-11 and force overtime.
After a scoreless three minutes in overtime, Edwards netted a
pass from Emily Brooks (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston), putting Western
Connecticut ahead 12-11 with 2:26 remaining. The Colonials would
add a second goal and hold on for the 13-11 non-conference win.
Williams led Farmingdale State with a team-high four goals.
Rigney pitched in with three scores, while Rothar added two goals
and two assists. Freshman attack Kim Lehmann (Albertson,
N.Y./Herricks) caused a game-high five turnovers for the Rams.
Western Connecticut was led by Edwards and senior midfielder
Kara Kruczkiewicz (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) who each scored
four goals.
Senior goalkeeper Courtney Caden (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville)
had 12 saves for Farmingdale, while freshman Meghan Maroney
(Granby, Conn./Granby Memorial) recorded 10 saves for the
Colonials.
