Maritime's Late Comeback Holds for Victory

The Maritime Privateers (5-2, 3-1) came back from a nine-point second half deficit to drive away with a 72-71 Skyline Conference victory tonight, spoiling Farmingdale State's home opener. The Rams now stand at 2-3 overall, 1-1 in the conference.

With seven lead changes in the first half, Farmingdale State trailed by as much as seven points twice, before a late 17-6 run gave the Rams a 38-34 halftime advantage. That run by Farmingdale featured five points from sophomore guard Christian Nunez (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains), including 3-of-4 from the foul line, and a three-pointer from junior guard Joshua Smith (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) from mid-court as time expired.

The Rams led throughout the second half, but Maritime started chipping away at a nine point lead with 8:40 on the clock. Senior forward Andrew Geisel (Media, Pa./Penncrest) capped off a 12-2 rally over the next four minutes with a three-pointer to give the Privateers the 65-64 lead with 4:39 remaining to play.

Farmingdale responded for a four point cushion after two layups and a free throw, leading 69-65 with 3:09 left. Geisel cut the lead to two points on the next possession for Maritime, trailing now 69-67. After a Rams miss, senior forward Giovanni Hurley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College) sank a jumper and was fouled in order to complete the three-point play and give his team a 70-69 lead with 1:29 to go. He then pushed the lead to three, 72-69, on Maritime's next shot and Farmingdale made just one basket in the final minute, falling to the Privateer's 72-71.

Hurley finished with game-highs of 24 points, 13 rebounds, four steals and three blocks. Senior forward Quamel Lyerly (Inwood, N.Y./Lawrence) had 23 points and eight boards. Junior guard Mike McSloy (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) dished out a game-high five assists.

For the Rams, Smith totaled 18 points. Junior guard Dyshaun Flournoy (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) finished with 14 points, while senior guard John Dabney (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) had nine points for the night.

Farmingdale State will now host NYU-Poly on Thursday, December 9th at 8:00 p.m.
