UMass Boston - 5, Farmingdale State - 2
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State College women's tennis team dropped a non-conference matchup to UMass Boston, 5-2, on Friday afternoon. FSC dropped to 1-3 overall, while the Beacons won their season opener and are 1-0.
The Rams swept all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Seniors Gabriella Loria (Levittown, N.Y.) and Natalia Furchel (Manorville, N.Y.) earned a 6-3 victory at the top flight, while sophomore Kaelin Burnett (East Islip, N.Y.) and freshman Ana Hernandez (Valley Stream, N.Y.) picked up a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles. Junior Marybeth Zimos (Hicksville, N.Y.) and freshman Emma Johannsen (Verplanck, N.Y.) completed the sweep with a 6-3 victory in the third position.
UMass Boston responded by taking five of the six singles matches. Loria recorded FSC's lone singles victory, earning a 6-4, 6-2 win in the No. 3 position. Burnett battled at No. 2 singles, falling to Sofia DaSilva Askew, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2), while Hernandez narrowly dropped the fourth slot, 6-3, 7-6 (7-1).
The Beacons also picked up wins at No. 5 singles in three sets, as Kathy Roqueza came back to defeat Johannsen, 0-6, 6-3, 6-3, and won the sixth position in straight sets. At No. 1, UMass Boston's Zainab Patel earned the victory by retirement.
The Rams are right back in action tomorrow, Saturday, September 12th, when they host Hunter College in a non-conference match at noon.
