Farmingdale State 9, Purchase 2
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | Behind a hat trick from sophomore
Carlos Hernandez (Dix Hills, N.Y.), the Farmingdale State College men's soccer team kicked off its three-game Skyline Conference homestand with an 9-2 victory over SUNY Purchase on Tuesday afternoon.
Hernandez's hat trick is just the 19th in program history, and first since Anthony Bileddo netted four times versus Mount Saint Mary College on September 21, 2024. Additionally, FSC's nine goals on the afternoon are tied for the fourth most in the team's NCAA era (since 2004), and the most since scoring seven times against Brooklyn College on October 8, 2023.
The Rams (4-6-2, 2-2-1 Skyline) jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the Panthers (1-9-1, 0-4-1), as Hernandez scored a pair of goals at the left-hand post. His first strike came 16 minutes in, when junior left back
William Guillen (Locust Valley, N.Y.) sent a cross from the left corner flag that Hernandez nodded home from close range to open the scoring.
Farmingdale State doubled its lead 19 minutes later, when freshman
Javier Newman (Amityville, N.Y.) crossed from the right-hand side to a wide open Hernandez at the back post. Newman's second assist came just over four minutes before halftime, when another right-sided cross found junior
Sebastian Cuenca (East Rockaway, N.Y.) – who scored on his second touch of the afternoon after subbing onto the field 50 seconds earlier.
After Purchase pulled one goal back just before the halftime whistle, Newman restored the hosts' three-goal edge in the 53rd minute of action. Sophomore winger
Lucca Noboa (Freeport, N.Y.) broke free down the left-hand side and sent a low cross across the six-yard box to Newman for an open tap in to put FSC ahead, 4-1.
The two teams traded goals just inside the 30-minute mark, with Noboa scoring on an open breakaway before Purchase netted its second goal of the afternoon via a penalty kick.
Sophomore midfielder
Josue Corea (Wyandanch, N.Y.) got onto the scoresheet on a 40-yard individual dribbling effort in the 72nd minute, before Hernandez rounded out his hat trick off a pass inside the penalty area from Newman with 15:51 to go.
Junior
Roobens Celine (Port-au-Prince, Haiti) accounted for the final score with less than five minutes remaining, when he beat the Panthers' goalkeeper to the lower-right corner.
Farmingdale State returns home Saturday (Oct. 10) for a 2:30 p.m. Skyline Conference kickoff against the University of Mount Saint Vincent.
