Women's Tennis Opens Skyline Play With Triumph at Yeshiva

Farmingdale State 6, Yeshiva 1
MONTCLAIR, N.J. | The Farmingdale State College women's tennis team opened its Skyline Conference title defense on Wednesday night with a convincing 6-1 victory over Yeshiva University at the Brookdale Park Tennis Center.

FSC (1-1, 1-0 Skyline) swept through all three doubles matches over the Maccabees (1-1, 0-1) to open the contest with a 1-0 advantage. In top-flight play, freshman Martine McGowan (Port Washington, N.Y.) and senior Gabriella Loria (Levittown, N.Y.) teamed up for a 6-2 victory over YU's Rina Pollock and Micka Mimoun, before junior Natalia Furchel (Eastport, N.Y.) and freshman Kaelin Burnett (East Islip, N.Y.) turned aside Anna Laufer and Eliana Tilem at the No. 2 slot. In the No. 3 position, seniors MacKenzie Gisler (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) and Mikayla DeMaria (West Babylon, N.Y.) closed out the sweep with a 7-6 win against Sarah Schewitz and Gabrielle Resnick, including a 7-2 advantage in the tiebreaker.

McGowan opened her Skyline singles career with a 6-2, 6-0 victory in the top flight against Pollock, before Furchel knocked off Mimoun by scores of 6-1 and 6-0 at No. 2 to push the Rams' edge in the match to 3-0. Gisler moved past Resnick in the fourth slot, 6-1 and 6-2, before Loria (6-3 and 6-4 against Schewitz) and senior Heather McGullam (Hauppauge, N.Y.; 6-2 and 6-4 versus Tilem) earned victories in the fifth and sixth flights, respectively.

Farmingdale State is back on the court Saturday in non-conference competition, when they travel to Oneonta State for a 10 a.m. first serve.
