Women's Lacrosse Falls Short at USMMA; Will Enter Playoffs as No. 2 Seed

Merchant Marine - 12, Farmingdale State - 10
KINGS POINT, N.Y. | The FSC women's lacrosse team fell short at the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Friday evening, falling by a 12-10 score. The Rams end the regular season with a 7-1 Skyline Conference record and will enter the playoffs as the No. 2 seed. FSC has earned a First Round bye and will host the Semifinal round on Thursday.

The Mariners (11-2, 8-0 Skyline) started quick, tallying the first five goals of the game. Farmingdale State (8-8) pulled one back before the end of the first quarter and opened the second with a goal from sophomore attack Carly Livingston (Farmingdale, N.Y.) to cut their deficit to 5-2.

Over the next eight minutes, Merchant Marine recorded three unanswered scores to take their largest lead of the game, 8-2.

FSC trailed 8-3 at the halftime break and produced three consecutive scores, from Izzy Sheridan (Glen Head, N.Y.), Jules Loughran (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Emily Sohm (Seaford, N.Y.), to close within two at 8-6.

USMMA used a 3-1 run to increase their advantage to 11-7 with 13:22 to play in the fourth quarter, but back-to-back goals by Sohm and Livingston, once again made it a two-goal game at 11-9.

After each team scored a goal within seconds of each other with three minutes remaining, Sheridan won the ensuing draw for Farmingdale State. Only 11 seconds later, Merchant Marine caused an FSC turnover and took a shot clock violation as the Rams gained possession with 1:18 on the clock. Farmingdale State took a shot 30 seconds later, but it was saved by USMMA goalkeeper Karianna Eagle. The Mariners ran out the final 47 seconds as they went on for the 12-10 victory.

Sohm registered a career-best six points on four goals and two assists, while Livingston had a hat trick in defeat. The FSC defense produced 13 caused turnovers with Sarah Fava (Lynbrook, N.Y.), Rylee Valenzano (Centereach, N.Y.) and Dominique Baldino (Island Park, N.Y.) contributing two apiece.

Farmingdale State has earned the second-seed for next week's Skyline Conference Championship and will host the winner of No. 3 Maritime and No. 6 Manhattanville in Thursday's (May 1) Semifinal.
