2024-25 Skyline Conference Women's Basketball Championship - First Round
(4) Farmingdale State - 53, (5) St. Joseph's-Long Island - 41
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. |Â FSC senior forward
Alexandria Walbroehl (Mastic Beach, N.Y.) recorded a career-night with 21 points and 27 rebounds to lead the fourth-seeded Farmingdale State women's basketball team to a 53-41 victory over fifth-seeded St. Joseph's-Long Island in the First Round of the Skyline Conference Championship on Tuesday evening. Walbroehl's 27 rebounds is the second-highest single-game total in school history, just behind the record of 31 rebounds by Alexxis Hunter in 2019. Her performance marked only the third 20-point, 20-rebound outing in program history, with the last coming from FSC Hall of Famer Kimberly Blakney in 2010.
The Rams (18-8) have advanced in the Skyline tournament and will next travel to the top-seeded United States Merchant Marine Academy (23-1, 20-0 Skyline) on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. FSC narrowly fell to the Mariners, 64-56, in their last meeting on January 22.
Before the game, senior guard
Erin Conte (Melville, N.Y.) was recognized with the Skyline Conference's Elite 19 Award. The award was introduced at the beginning of the 2024-25 academic year and is presented to the student-athlete competing in the Skyline Conference Championship with the highest grade-point average.
FSC opened the game with back-to-back baskets by senior guard
Isabella Greenwald (West Islip, N.Y.) to jump out to a 5-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles (17-9) trailed 9-4 just over three minutes in before using an 8-0 run to take a 12-9 advantage.
FSC was down by two, 14-12, before three points from junior guard
Shyann Parker (Floral Park, N.Y.) put them up by one heading into the second.
Walbroehl and Conte scored two points apiece to start the scoring in the second and give the Rams a five-point lead, 19-14.
Each team scored 10 points over the final seven minutes of the half as FSC was up 29-24 at the break. Walbroehl recorded 10 points and 12 rebounds in just the first 20 minutes of play.
The Rams extended their lead to eight after sophomore guard
Mia Simmons (Queens, N.Y.) knocked down a 3-pointer just 34 seconds into the third quarter.
Over the next six minutes, St. Joseph's-Long Island closed the gap to just one at 34-33. Farmingdale State responded with a Pohalski three-point play and two free-throws from Greenwald as they were up 39-33 heading to the fourth.
The Golden Eagles opened the fourth with a quick 3-pointer before Walbroehl answered with seven consecutive points to put FSC in front by 10. After three SJLI points, Walbroehl hit a pair of free-throws and made a layup to go up, 50-39, with three minutes remaining.
The Rams held at least a nine-point edge down the stretch as they earned the 53-41 victory.
Walbroehl made seven field goals and was a perfect 7-for-7 at the foul line en route to her career-high 21 points. She pulled down 16 defensive boards and 11 on the offensive glass. Greenwald made a pair of 3-pointers and finished with nine points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals. Conte and Parker (nine rebounds) produced six points and four steals apiece, while Simmons recorded five points and three rebounds. Pohalski added four points, three assists and three steals in the win.
