OLEAN, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State women's tennis team kicked off their 2024-25 year with a 7-0 shutout win over Alfred University on Saturday.
The Rams earned the lone doubles point, sweeping all three match-ups. Per the new ITA rules for the 2024-25 academic year, the team that wins two of the three doubles matches receives one dual match point. In addition, the format is three 6-game set doubles matches with a 7-point tiebreak at 6-all. Each singles match continues to be worth one point.Â
At top-flight doubles, junior
Amanda Jones (Mastic Beach, N.Y.) and sophomore
Natalia Furchel (Manorville, N.Y.) earned a 6-3 victory, while both the #2 duo of senior
Lien Collings (Merrick, N.Y.) and junior
MacKenzie Gisler (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.)Â and #3 combo of juniors
Gabriella Loria (Levittown, N.Y.) and
Mikayla DeMaria (West Babylon, N.Y.)Â picked up 6-2 wins.
FSC cruised through singles play with Furchel (6-0, 6-3), Jones (6-3, 6-2), Gisler (6-1, 6-2), Loria (6-2, 6-3) and junior
Heather McGullam (Hauppauge, N.Y. - 6-3, 6-1) capturing the second through sixth matches.
Collings clinched the shutout with a come-from-behind 2-6, 7-6 (10-2), 1-0 (10-4) victory in the #1 position.
Farmingdale State continues its opening weekend with two more matches at Nazareth (Sunday - 1pm) and Oswego (Monday - 11am).
