Volleyball Earns Seventh Straight Win; Improves to 5-0 in Skyline

KINGS POINT, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State women's volleyball team secured a 3-0 road victory over the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on Tuesday evening, marking their seventh straight win. The Rams remain perfect in Skyline Conference play and are tied with Manhattanville with five wins atop the standings. FSC will host the Valiants on Thursday evening.

In an opening set which featured 11 ties, Farmingdale State (11-4, 5-0 Skyline) trailed 14-13 before tallying four of the next five points to take a 17-15 advantage. After the Mariners (10-6, 3-2 Skyline) knotted the score at 17-17, kills from Sarah Rende (Wantagh, N.Y.), Mikayla Profeta (West Islip, N.Y.) and Samantha Russo (Bay Shore, N.Y.), along with a service ace by Doly DeJesus (Geneva, N.Y.), gave the Rams a 21-17 advantage. Farmingdale State led 23-20 and used back-to-back kills from Profeta to take the set.

FSC started quick in the second set, registering seven of the first eight points. USMMA narrowed the gap to 21-19 before scoring three straight points to jump in front. Farmingdale State responded with the final four points to capture the set, 25-22.

The third set had nine lead changes, ending with a 25-23 Rams victory. Tied at 23-23, Rende set up Profeta for a pair of kills to clinch the set and the match, 3-0.

Profeta finished with a match-high 16 kills, to go with 11 digs, one ace and one block assist. Russo recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 14 digs, while Rende tallied 27 assists, 15 digs and three kills. 

Junior Delaney Keegan (Lake Grove, N.Y.) and senior Lana Ventura (Port Washington, N.Y.) led the Rams defensively with 18 digs apiece and sophomore Stephanie Nemecek (Farmingdale, N.Y.) added five kills in the victory.

Sophia Murray had a team-high 12 points for the Mariners.

Farmingdale State will next play host to Manhattanville University in a battle for first place on Thursday, October 17th at 7:00 p.m.
