Farmingdale State - 3, Staten Island - 0 (26-24, 25-11, 25-2)
Staten Island, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State women's volleyball team and first year head coach, David Mayerson, opened the 2016 season with a 3-0 victory over the College of Staten Island tonight. The Rams improved to 1-0 with the non-conference win, while the Dolphins drop to 0-1 overall.
Trailing 13-9 in the first set, Farmingdale State used a 7-2 run to grab a 16-15 advantage and force a CSI timeout. Closing the set tied at 22-22, the Rams pulled ahead 24-22, before CSI tied it up 24-24. The Rams won the next two points for a 26-24 win.
Farmingdale State rolled to a 25-11 win in the second set, before posting a .500 attack percentage in the third set along with their 25-2 victory.
Senior outside Christina Hickey (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) finished with a team-leading 11 kills, while sophomore outside Annie Cosgrave (Bay Shore, N.Y.) had 10 kills and six digs. Junior Gina Giacalone (Hauppauge, N.Y.) tallied a team-high 12 digs. Sophomore setters Lauren Anne Strezenec (Merrick, N.Y.) and Meaghan Moran (Islip, N.Y.) split the setting duties with 17 and 15 assists, respectively.
The Rams will now travel to Montclair State on Saturday, September 10 to face Montclair at 11:00 a.m. and Mt Aloysius at 1:00 p.m.
